I just found a baby squirrel...looks like he's dying.....? Keep reading for the dog question.....?

I was outside alittle while ago and saw that my cat was ';playing'; with something so I walked over and there he had the cutest little baby squirrel I ever saw. He is still breathing but his eyes are closed. I put him in a box on top of some towels and put a little towel over him. I also put a couple drops of water into his mouth with a tiny dropper. Is there anything else i should be doing? Do you think he will survive?? My daughter is all upset over it, I just keep telling her that God might take him back to heaven tonite. If anyone has any advise I would be grateful to hear it. Peace and God bless to you all.

YES, I know this is in the dog section but this is where i am mostly and I know there are alot of caring people here. And if you really want a question pertaining to a dog, here it is....what dog name would you call this little guy??I just found a baby squirrel...looks like he's dying.....? Hey there its me. Try some can milk if you have some if not use regular milk, try to get it warm. Just hold the dropper in your hand for a few min to get it warm. If it makes it till morning try to find a rescue center that takes wild animals.I just found a baby squirrel...looks like he's dying.....? Keep reading for the dog question.....?
if he lives through the night then in the morning you should take him to a local pet store who has lots of expirience or maybe even a vet and find out what you can do to treat and find out something a baby squirel would eat besides nuts and put some water in there or maybe even milk... thats the best you can do for now

Good Luck!!!!
Treat him just like you would a newborn pup; with puppy milk replacer every 2 hours or so, and a nice warm environment. I agree that his chances of survival are pretty slim, as it sounds like he could be in shock. If he's still alive in the morning then I'd contact your local wildlife center/humane society and see what further advice they can give you.
Fuzzy.
you might take it to the humane society. they can help. good luck
I'd call him Fido.

The main thing with baby animals is to keep them warm. There have been several times when we've had to take care of baby rabbits (my sister and I had the unfortunate experience of having our 2 ';female'; rabits breed..not fun) because the mother had attacked them and they were injured.

Here are some things you can do...first of all, if you have some gardening gloves or heavy leather gloves..wear those when handling this little guy...getting bit and having to go to the doctor not so fun...and check for any spots that are severely bleeding. Next, keep him warm by using a waterbottle heated up in the microwave and covered with a towel, an electric blanket or near a lamp (but not enough to blind him). If his temperature is really cold, get a ziplock back, wrap him in a washcloth etc and put him in there (leave it open of course) then dip him in warm (not boiling) water.

Next, for the open wounds, GENTLY blot them to get as much dirt ect out, then use a SMALL amount of neosporin...if necessary. Then just wait.
Most vets don't have a license to treat wildlife, but if you look in the yellow pages for an emergency vet, you can try calling them and see if any of them will take an injured baby squirrel. He really needs medical attention, and at the very least, the care of an experienced wildlife rehabilitator.

If you can't do any of that until morning, you can go out to a grocery store and buy some unflavored pedialyte and try feeding that to him in the syringe to keep his energy up. Also, get a hot water bottle and put it in the box with him, or place a heating pad on the low setting underneath the box to keep him warm. If he makes it until the morning, you really should get him to a vet.
You should try to find a rehabilitator in your area to give the squirrel to. Most states don't allow you to keep wildlife unless you have a special permit. Baby squirrels are hard to raise, but you should be feeding it baby formula. Keep using the eye dropper and be sure you feed him slowly. If you see milk bubbles coming out of his nose, you are feeding him too quickly and the milk is going into the lungs instead of the stomach. You will need to feed him about every 2 hours or so, or when you see him begin to move around. Keep using towels and replace them as they get soiled. Keep one over him as well, as they like to tunnel into things. He's probably just a newborn and that is why his eyes are shut. Don't feel bad if he dies, as their mortality rate is high when seperated from their mothers. You could try looking up wildlife rehabilitors in your phone book to see if there are any near you or your local wildlife conservation office.
