Should I keep the squirrel that i raised since he was a babY?

He's really nice and idk....Should I keep the squirrel that i raised since he was a babY?
I would contact a wildlife rehabilitation center or shelter. They have trained volunteers who know how to re-introduce squirrels into the wild, even if the squirrel has been raised by humans.

You COULD keep the squirrel as a pet, but they take a LOT of time, patience, love and attention. If they bond with you, they will usually expect lots of attention. They can be very destructive to your furniture, curtains and knickknacks -- not because they want to be ';bad';, but because they are curious and playful and like to climb and jump. You may want to squirrel-proof an entire room of your house, so there's nothing the squirrel can break or ruin. Squirrels also have sharp toenails that can scratch you by accident, so be careful about that.

They also can become fat and/or ill if you give them the wrong foods, so please be sure to research what is the most nutritious diet for your particular species of squirrel (there are several in the U.S., assuming you're from the U.S.)

Another thing to think about is that even if the squirrel seems very happy to be living with you NOW, when it gets older, sometimes hormones kick in and it starts yearning to mate with other squirrels. Or sometimes just plain old instinct kicks in, and it wants to be living in the trees. I've heard of pet squirrels getting very depressed when they're not allowed to be free. Of course, on the other hand, I've also heard of pet squirrels whose humans TRY to release them into the wild, but the squirrels refuse. It all depends on the squirrel, I suppose. :)

And that was probably WAY more than you thought you'd get as an answer, eh? But hopefully at least some of it was helpful to you.Should I keep the squirrel that i raised since he was a babY?
KEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HA HA HA!
no you shouldn`t. i suggest u return it to the wild. please `:]
Its up to you,but it cant go back to the wild if its friendly you could try a nature resort / animal sanctuary. their so cute
You should keep him. He knows you and doesn't have any outdoor instinct. Hes your friend now live with him and love him as he loves you.
here's another vote for no. squirrels are wild animals. you did your job in raising him, now it is time to return him to the wild. hopefully he will learn from his fellow squirrels in how to look for nuts, etc. much of it is instinct anyway. maybe you should let him go now before the cold weather gets here.

Please help? Question about baby (young) squirrel?

Do squirrels get sick if you hold them too much like wild mice do? Or is it okay since they are always with there mom when sleeping until they leave. Please help? Question about baby (young) squirrel?
I would not imagine that holding him would affect him in any way.

What I think you have to worry about is if you raising him will affect him later in life. If he has all his food provided, he is kept warm, and is contained, he might not be able to take care of himself in the wild.

Consider taking him to a SPCA. That is what I did when I found an abandoned baby bird. They will raise it in a way that will not affect it's ability to care for itself when it is released.

Do baby squirrels after hand feeding and being wiped with a warm cotton ball go potty everytime? i need to k?

Actually, when hand feeding squirrels, kittens, puppies, etc...it is advisable to wipe or kind of massage their tummies and move in a motion towards their ';bowels, etc.'; with a towel or cotton, for that purpose. The mother would do that if she were there and you are the foster mom. :p

It can actually be really hard on them if you don't.

God luck with your ';squoilll';...the are so cute!Do baby squirrels after hand feeding and being wiped with a warm cotton ball go potty everytime? i need to k?

Squirrels should be left in the wild where they belong.

    Have a baby gray squirrel...?

Found him today. He is approx. 4-5 weeks old (has his fur, but eyes are not yet open) and is dehydrated. Currently giving him pedialyte every 30-45 minutes, but I will not be able to go out and get puppy formula until tomorrow morning.

Does anyone have first hand experience with raising an orphan squirrel? (no ';put him back'; answers, please -- found him in the corner of the tack room at the barn)

Also, I live in PA... is anyone with familiar with the regulations on having a squirrel? Is it allowed? Do you need a permit?

    Thanks!Have a baby gray squirrel...?
I have raised baby squirrels with a wildlife rehabilitator for over a year. I will not give info on how to raise it since it is illegal to take animals from the wild. I will, however, advise you to take it to a rehabilitator so it can one day be returned to the wild where it belongs. If you are caught taking an animal from the wild you will be in quite a bit of trouble. If you want a pet squirrel, look into buying a non-native one... a permit may still be required.

There is no way you will be able to legally keep the squirrel you found. You would have to get a rehabilitation permit in order to care for the next one you find... but that does not help you with this one and you still wouldn't be able to keep the next one unless there is something keeping it from being released.Have a baby gray squirrel...?
As the previous person stated, it is illegal and not to mention cruel to attempt to keep a wild squirrel as a pet. When people try to keep squirrels, raccoons, etc as pets, at some point they realize it's too much of a responsibility, and then release to the wild. The animal is use to being fed by the human and doesn't know how to survive in the wild.

You should call your local Humane Society and they can give you contact info for the nearest Wildlife Rehab Center. They will nurse the orphaned squirrel and teach it how to fend for itself then release back to the wild.

Found some baby squirrels today and put them back in the tree will mother get them?

Early this morning I had gone out to unlock the gate and heard a ';crack' from one of the pecan trees and saw a bunch of leaves fall. Anyway there were three tiny off white little puppy looking things. Anyway I got a washcloth and put them in a spot on the tree where its sorta like a basket. tree is real old and big. Went back at dusk and they were gone. They were to little to even have their eyes open so wondering if they carry their young like cats and dogs. Thanks.Found some baby squirrels today and put them back in the tree will mother get them?

Call your local emergency vet and get the number of a wild animal rescue, they will most likely take it. In the meantime, keep it in soft cloth and, if you have one, put a heating pad under it on a VERY low setting. If the rescue operation can't take it, they will most likely be able to tell you how to take care of it yourself. I raised three baby squirells with a rescue's help. It was a really nice experience. Good luck and Happy New Year to you too.
Call the Dept. of Conservation they will often give advice or even take the animal. My sister once took a bird to a local zoo.
    TO the wildlife centre ASAP!
Your local pet supplies will have the milk mix that you can use to raise the squirrel. If you want to keep it, that is. They are easy to feed and are alot of fun when they get older. If its eyes aren't open yet, you need to bottle feed it every 2 hours, just like a kitten. Make sure to keep it warm, if you keep it indoors with room temp you shouldn't need a heating pad. You will also need to assist in using the bathroom. If you don't think this is something you want to do, it takes alot of time. Call a local vet for a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. They will take it off your hands.
You could ask an animal rescue shelter and see if they will take it for you. i think that squirells eat acorns and nuts, if it is a baby though I would take the shells off for it especially while it is injured. You shouldnt do that forever though it will never learn how to do it itself then.Good luck, i would definetly talk to a vet or a pet shop worker or an animal rescue shelter.
Call an Emergency vet center, or zoo or anything related to animals, sry... I don`t know what to do. I hope the lil` guy lives.
    go to a vet...

    do research online

to recieve the most accurate information

    IMMEDIATELY!
i have raised 2 baby flying squirrels, both brought to me by my cats! First get a small animal baby bottle, usually Winn Dixie carries them, get a can of Pet evaporated milk, fill bottle half milk and 1/4 water add a little white Karo syrup and a tiny pinch of salt

warm and feed to baby, feed about every 2-3 hours, keep baby warm and secure in a box with towels, you can email me if need be
do you have a wildlife center nearby? they would know how to take care of him.

But you have to be careful squirrels can get rabies.. so call a vet asap to make sure you and your cat are okay too!
You need a heating pad, a bottle with a small nipple, and your nearest pet shop should have formula that is ussually used for kittens or puppies, it works on squirrels too. O and make sure you wipe its bottom to stimulate the process of pooping.

Help what do you feed baby squirrels?

My dad found a nest next to a tree that had two baby squirrels and they have a little bit of fur on them but they havn't open their eyes yet. We brought then inside and put then in a hamster cage full of the same grass they had in the nest. is there anything else I need to do?Help what do you feed baby squirrels?
yes you must place them on a heating blanket to simulate the warmth of being in the nest.

Next you must find some Pedialyte and feed it to them through a syringe. About 1 cc (1-2 if they are fully furred) every two hours.

Then take them to a rehabber AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. For it is illegal to hold wildlife for over 48 hours without a permit.

thank you.Help what do you feed baby squirrels?
squirrels eat nuts and leaves and seeds...

since they are babies right now you should do a little research on how ot take care of them i'll give you a website make sure to let them out because when they live in the wild they are free they go where ever they want

you should let them go free when they are big enough to take care of them selves i hope the websitr helps....

I found two almost baby squirrels in the middle of the road, but I'm keeping them until they can go. Help?

One looks like it barely likes to walk, and right now I have nothing to feed them (only grass an acorns). They were lying in the middle of a parking lot space, no nests were around. just them two.

I really don't like to see them die, so what should I feed them?I found two almost baby squirrels in the middle of the road, but I'm keeping them until they can go. Help?
you should give them a lot of warmth find a huge box or a tub they can stay in tell there grown up they need at least 98.5 degrees to live in feed them ever 2-4 hours so they can be as healthy as can be this or these to baby squirrels have more chances of living with there mother but if you want to raise them go ahead (you can also give them to your local wide life center) do not feed him in tell you are positive they are warm and no injuries if it is a little too cold the organs shut down and it will die if you leave it in a card board box with a towel it will die soon.

please use this website if you scroll down there will be a next button and it will tell you how much they should weigh as they get older good luck and god bless you and those squirrels!

    Do what??????

Cats that are domesticated enough to have a bell and a name tag probably can't be considered a feral cat. Unless it has been out in the wild for quite some time and no longer belongs to whomever belled/tagged him/her.

so. What is your question then?1yr old farrel cat, just killed a squirrel and baby possium raise with 2 BIG dogs, now tormenting neighbors?
See the vet or give her cat nip.
what exactly is the question? If the cat is farrel, then you mean to say it is wild? So it should be put down then. Obviously it is causing upset in the neighborhood, and killing wildlife- If it your pet cat, and just causing trouble with the neighbors pet dog, then you shouldn't let the cat outside.

Will a female squirrel adopt another squirrels babies if she is dead?

Not normally. She's more likely to kill and possibly eat them (Grey Squirrels WILL occasionally eat meat, but normally it comes from birds' nests).

The only exception is if she's recently given birth and is still lactating. Even then, it's unlikely she'll adopt.

Even if she does the adoptee needs to be almost exactly the same size as the rest of the litter. If it's too small it will normally be out-competed for milk and if too large it will out-compete and may attack the others; either way you end up with dead squirrels.

Unless you can micro-manage the adoption or can devote the time to hand-rearing, it's normally kindest to euthanase an orphaned squirrel if it cannot already seek food and shelter for itself, or to simply leave it where found and let nature take care of things.

If you're in the UK, squirrels are legally vermin so hand-reared animals cannot lawfully be released. You also need a huge enclosure to keep them humanely. Will a female squirrel adopt another squirrels babies if she is dead?
    i dont think so...

Don't take animals out of the wild to make them pets. That's selfish, unfair to the animal, and illegal. Squirrels make bad pets and are extremely hard to care for properly. It would definitely be best to get it to a wildlife rehabber right away. A lot of the babies that are brought in to them had been in someone's home for a while first, because they thought they were cute and wanted to try to raise them. Sadly, a lot of them were brought in once they became seriously ill or otherwise unmanageable. It's sad because I know that they only wanted to help and had good intentions, but were doing more harm than good. The survival rates of orphans brought in the same day or next day they were found increased their chances of surviving greatly. Please do right by the squirrel, and give it a second chance at a happy, natural life in the wild.

New born baby and pet squirrel?

Ok first of all need to keep it very very warm by placing it in a box with a heating pad underneath outside bottom of box set on low or medium setting. Line the box with flannel or fleece and some tissue. Need to feed it but not until it is warmed up. Needs Esbilac that get at pet store and bottle or syringe. Feed it every 2to 2/12 hours for a total of 9-10 feeds a day. Call a local vet to see if take in wildlife or can refer you to a wildlife rehabber who can take and raise with other babies and release when ready. If at all possible put back in nest or tree if can find it. Sometimes the mother squirrel is moving the babies and will do so one at a time. She may come back or if hears it cry may come get it. Could try putting in box and watching from afar to see for awhile but watch for other animals and watch that it is not to cold out to do this. Mother squirrels pick up young like cats by nape of neck and carry. If not wildlife rehabber best choice. It is free. If vet does not know of any call DEC in your area and they will refer. If you have to take care of it then do the above with feedings then after it is a week old the coat appears as soft fuzz and whiskers are seen. Then feed every 2 hours for a total of 7-9 feedings a day. 2 weeks old skin will darken and will be some furn. eyes are still closed and ear canals begin to open. Upper and lower teeth begin to emerge. Feed every 3 hours for a total of 6-8 feedings a day. At 3 weeks eyes start to open. Feed 6-7 times a day. 4 weeks ears are open learn to stand but wobbly. Tail does not curl yet. feed 5-6 times day. 5 weeks old eyes open and tail is furred. put small pieces of rodent or monkey chow in cage. feed fromula 5 times day. 6 weeks old sit on haunches and curl tail and hold foods in front paws. Cutting and grinding teeth. offer weaning foods. formula feed 4 times day. 7 weeks old exploring outside nest. need to be in clibing cage with branches and weaning foods. formula feed 3 times day. 8-10 weeks old tail is bushy now. Eat more solid foods.Venture outside nest more often. May show charging behavior and not want to be held for feedings. offer it through cage. 10-12 weeks old weaned and should beable to chew through whole walnut. have good motor skills and fear of predators and humans. Put them into outdoor pre-release cage with branches so learn to climb and jump. 14 weeks old ready to go into wild. Leave cage door open and let come and go until gone for good. Leave some food in there. weaning foods are monkey and rodent show get at pet stores or on line. Also fruits, nuts, and cheerios. Good luck hope this helps.Help plz i found a baby newborn squirrel?
Momma squirrels like Momma Dogs and Cats and Rabbits seem to sense when they have a bad baby and they boot it out of the nest.

If this little squirrel has been very long without it's required body warmth,it is likely to die regardless of what you do.And since you don't know how long it had been laying there it probably did lose alot of it's natural life sustaining body warmth

In all reality, the best thing you can do for this little fellow is to put it out of it's misery because any time at all without correct body temp and the little fellow is susceptible to bacterial/viral infections that is going to kill it anyway but it would be a slow death.
DO NOT PUT IT BACK IT WILL LIKELY BE EATEN BY ANOTHER ANIMAL.KEEP IT VERY WARM AND MAKE AS MAN PHONE CALLS AS YOU CAN FOR SOMEONE TO COME FROM A RESCUE CENTER I DO NOT SUGGEST DRIVING IT THERE IT WILL MOST LIKELY DIE FROM A HEART ATTACK.

LET ME KNOW WHAT HAPPENS THANKS.

Get a squirrel when it is young. It will be much easier for it to adapt to living with humans than if it had been living in a wild environment.

    Step 2Make sure the squirrel's cage is elevated and provides plenty of room for him to jump about. Put it in an area where other animals or reptiles can't get to it. Secure the door so that your squirrel can't escape. Keep the cage clean regularly, to keep it from smelling and to keep your pet healthy. Put branches or tree-like objects in the cage so he can get exercise and add a few ';chew toys.';

Step 3Feed your squirrel a nutritious diet. Bananas, apples, carrots, lettuce, green beans and mealworms are a few examples of what you can feed him.

Step 4Keep your squirrel well watered. Put a dish of water in his cage, and remember to change it often.

Step 5Look out for signs that your squirrel might be sick. If he exhibits loss of appetite, lethargy, watery eyes, diarrhea or other abnormal symptoms, get him to a veterinarian immediately.

Step 6Be very careful who you allow to handle your pet. Squirrels can easily be injured if someone handles them roughly. The can bite if they feel threatened.
Uh oh.That's happened to me before!

If you want to keep it then get an 16by14 inch bird cage. They are usually pretty expensive but you can get a $48 one at Bird.com.

  • PLEASE help with tips on care for a small (note, not pinky baby) squirrel?

Okay, I found a little baby squirrel in the yard who is likely seperated from it's home/mother due to the massive landscaping project going on across the street in what used to be a very dense forest area. The little fellow (I am assuming it's male?? really no clue) is fully furred, ears open, eyes open, tail beginning to curl and he is very active. I am doing the best I can since no rehabilitators are in my direct area. I bought Enbilac, but he was not interested...seems way more interested in dry plain cheerios and bananas. So that's what he has been eating these last few days. So far so good...he seems active, alert and happy. He just sleeps an awful lot, usually most the day until I come and wake him 3x a day to take meals and play, which he does pretty well.

I'm worried about the constant sleeping, the site I visited about baby squirrel care says he is probably between 6-8 weeks of age. So I am well aware he is weaned and can poop himself, and I've been finding his poop all over anyways. I offer him clean water in a small dish and he seems more interested in play with the water than drinking it. That I am concerned about. I called local animal shelters and all they did was say they couldn't take him in, and that I should be wary of touching him due to rabies...yet declined to offer much else by way of signs and only served to make me paranoid!! I can't release this little thing because he's way too small and has no nest to survive the winter, and he has become too attached to me.

So, I need to know what I need to look for in a (potrntially) rabid squrriel since they done med me paranoid, how much they should be drinking now, and what is the best food for this age range? He seems very alert and happy since his first day here, now on day 4. Any help will be greatly appreciated.PLEASE help with tips on care for a small (note, not pinky baby) squirrel?
O.K. Now the voice of experience speaking,My wife and I have raised many baby squirrels successfully. You might feed him a little condensed goat milk cut fifty/fifty with water from a pet bottle. cut down the cheese rations, don,t worry about him sleeping so much that's natural for baby squirrels. when he is a sub adult move the cage to a rural location and feed less and less as time goes by scatter a little e food further away from the cage so it has to search for it. This is about all you can do for it. A captive raised squirrel's chances of being ';rehabilitated'; are astronomically low.It would be Much better to keep it in a large cage permanently.PLEASE help with tips on care for a small (note, not pinky baby) squirrel?
Sounds like goofy knows what he is talking about. I would be afraid of the rabies though, my Uncle got rabies from a squirrel and had to have several rabies shots. My point...please be careful!
the only way an animal can get rabies is if they were bitten by a rabid animal or ate an infected animal carcass. That should ease your mind about the rabies. The number of rabid animals is a lot lower than people make it seem. (btw... the virus would show in the animal and kill it. If he has no signs of rabies, he probably doesn't have it)

Is there anything I can do for this baby squirrel? Can the mother get it back?

So I was out mowing the back lawn and after I was a little ways into it, I noticed that my dog (she's a chow/labrador mix) was not running around playing and barking like she usually does when I am doing that. So, I was going to go look for her. She came running up and I saw that she had something in her mouth. I quickly found a way to get her to put it down, by making her think that we were going inside. She put it down, and I was able to trick her into going in the house and go her in there. It looks to be a baby squirrel. It's back is wet with what is apparently slobber from where my dog had it in her mouth. I also see a little bit of blood on it's back/side. It was crawling around a little bit at first, but seemed to tire out easily after a few steps. It's still alive and still breathing, out in the open in my yard. It's in the grass, and laying on it's stomach flat in almost a fetal position. I think it's just tired and sleeping. It's eyes look barely open - probably just starting to open. It has made a few cries out (squeak noises) and in the trees somewhere nearby (sounds like possibly the next yard) I hear these similar cries out from multiple sources. It sounds almost like a bunch of cats sort of meowing/squeaking, and I think it may be the squirrels' parent(s) looking for it.

Nobody is at home right now, and I don't want the dog to be let out into the back yard when someone does get home. We have a fenced in yard on both sides, so I could put it through the fence into the back yard of either neighbor to keep my dog from getting it again. However, I'm not sure they'll find it since both are all overgrown in their back yard.

I found a nut, cracked it open and got the good stuff. I put a little piece in front of it's nose...it wouldn't eat it. I know a good bit about some animals, but I'm an idiot when it comes to squirrels. As a warm blooded mammal, it still drinks milk from it's mother, right? Is there any way that if the mother finds it's location by hearing it, that she or another squirrel would literally be able to pick the baby up in their mouth and carry it back up to the nest? Or is it just totally screwed if it fell out of the nest?Is there anything I can do for this baby squirrel? Can the mother get it back?
Did you take it inside? Do that and wrap it in a soft towel to keep it warm. If you can get a dropper, do so and get some warm baby's milk if you have any. Ask your neighbors for that as well. Though the parents may be looking for it, you are scaring them away just by being there. All you can do right now is take care of it. Stop the bleeding by carefully wiping the wound with a paper towel that is wet with warm water and loosely wrapping gauze around it (not the sticky type). Get it to a vet as soon as possible. You should be feeding it every two hours. Keep it warm and watch it carefully. You could put it in a shoe box with a small light that will keep it warm but not too warm that is 3-5 inches above the box. Keep it away from your dog and contact anyone you know who could help you. Good luck.Is there anything I can do for this baby squirrel? Can the mother get it back?
I would bring it to a vet.
First try to find a local wildlife rehabilitator. Try the internet, search for wildlife rehaber. Go to your state game commission/department, web site and see if they have rehabers listed. Get on the telephone to game officials. In some states the department of environmental/natural resources will know where a rehaber is. Call local pet shops, and ask if they know a rehaber. When I managed a shop I had the numbers on a list right next to the phone.

OK now for first aid. If the squirrel has enough strength put it into a tree where the other squirrels can care for it. If it doesn't put it into a ventilated cardboard box with a few paper towels on the bottom and place the box in a warm location. Food and water/milk are not critical at this point. The animal is TOOOOO scared to think about eating, and your attempts to feed it will stress it more. What it needs first is a nice quiet safe box to hide in where no giant people or dogs bother it. You mentioned blood and backside, we can't be squeamish, did you mean rectal bleeding, or does it have a surface wound on it's backside?

Edit: email me if the squirrel needs more help.

Whoever did the thumbs down knows that most vets don't want to see wild animals. The rehabers know which vets to go to. Find a rehaber.

Edit2: Don't try to feed it!!!! It is scared to death and the last thing it needs is some monster trying to force it to drink some alien liquid. Let it calm down in a quiet small space before you do ANYTHING ELSE. Hopefully in the next couple of hours you can locate a rehabilitator. You aren't in south central Pa are you? I know the rehabers here. Don't do the light bulb, you are more likely to cook or burn the squirrel than help it. Put it in a small box with PAPER towels and put the whole box in a warm, safe place.

How Should We Take Care of a Injured Baby Squirrel?

We found a injured baby squirrel that had fallen out of a tree. She has her baby teeth, but we don't know how old she is. What should we do to care for her. She is bleeding out of her nose a little bit but can still move around. We gave her some warm milk and cleaned her up and stuck her in a box with some towels to keep her warm. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to take care of her (what should we feed her, how many times, how much? etc. etc.)

the milk is okay you should wash it with medium water. i dont know what to feed it tho. i think you should take it to an animal shelter. they will know what to do.
    remember its a wild animal
Okay, I've taken care of squirrels for several years, and rehabilitating them is a very difficult task. You can do it though, I promise. Depending on the size of the squirrel, you will have to feed it differently. If it doesn't have all of it's fur yet, you need to feed it every hour on the hour. If it is smaller than the size of a coaster but has fur, it needs to be fed every two hours. If it is larger than that, you should be fine feeding it every 5 hours.

Use an eyedropper and feed it milk. Any kind of milk is fine, but whole milk is the best because it has the most fat in it, which they need to grow. It may mean having to set your alarm every hour on the hour to feed it, but it's worth it- I promise. Put some peanuts in there with him. Open them for him, though. If he can eat solid food then you won't have to give him milk except for maybe every 5 hours.

Milk is the most important thing you can feed the baby!!

The setting you made up for him sounds perfect, if he's really that small- maybe put a heating pad underneath the box to keep him warm.

If all of this is too much trouble, look up a nearby animal rescue league that could possibly take him in.

I got bit on the nose by a baby squirrel, what should I do?

Okay This guy had a baby squirrel as pet today and my friend had it on her back. It was time for me to go so i gave my friend a hug and I didn't know the squirrel was on her back so i felt something sting my nose i took a closer look and i saw it. I didn't break any skin but I got home and put some alcohol on the spot just to be safe and sum ointment what should I do next. Can someone please answer this ASAP!!!!!I got bit on the nose by a baby squirrel, what should I do?
if it didnt break the skin, there really isnt any reason to worry, nothing would have gotten into your bloodstreamI got bit on the nose by a baby squirrel, what should I do?
Squirrels can get rabies (but very rarely). They also can carry other diseases like tularemia.(generally found in rabbits). In fact the list includes bubonic plague! 8^O

But I wouldn't worry about it, especially if it didn't break the skin.

i would guess clean it with peroxide and keep an eye on it. if it didn't break the skin your probably ok. maybe call a doctor just to be sure.
    find it and shoot it
welll.... i am not sure.. sorry. i wish i could help.

maybe u could see a doctor make sure no infection.

put some sort of cream that might help

  • What do we do, we found a baby squirrel left on the blazing sidewalk?

My dad found a baby squirrel on the sidewalk and our car is being repaired so we can't take it to a clinic until tomorrow. I tried Google-ing what it eats, but one site will say feed it skim milk because it can't digest cow fat, the next says whole because it needs the fat. It's eyes aren't opened yet either. What do we do, we found a baby squirrel left on the blazing sidewalk?
Since it's a baby I would feed it skim milk (just in case) and keep it till its eyes open and then talk to a vetWhat do we do, we found a baby squirrel left on the blazing sidewalk?
You can call the S.P.C.A if there is one in your area but there isn't much you can do about it, really there isn't. It may have been abandoned. You can try and nurse it back to health but I don't recommend that as you don't know if it has any diseases. It's a part of their life so something happened to it.
Hello! Squirrels eat seeds, nuts, fruits, fungi, lichens, buds, mushrooms, roots, pine cones, leaves, twigs and bark. They do not normally eat meat.

    I hope I helped!
Call a wildlife rescue maybe? There is bound to be one that is willing to come out to pick him up.
if you touch it the mom won't take it back o_O
    keep it

Where can i get or buy a baby squirrel?

ok i have fostered or taken care of 6 or 7 baby squirrels in the past with no problems at all! and i haven't came across any lately and i really miss having one. so i was wondering where should look or call to buy a baby squirrel of my own! i know how to take good care of them! and i know that they are wild animals! Where can i get or buy a baby squirrel?
Why can't you just get a sugar glider? I have 2 of them and they are like flying squirrels!

http://sugargliderinfo.org/Where can i get or buy a baby squirrel?
Unless you are a licensed wildlife rehabber, it is against the law for you to be in possession of any wildlife. baby squirrels are not pets.
Unless you live in Florida, it is illegal for you to have them. But I have seen a place that sells squirells online.
    you cant!!!!

    Its ILLEGAL!!!!

You should not have even been raising them in the FIRST PLACE!!!

Emergency! I've got a dying baby squirrel on my hands!?

He's a little grey squirrel. He's about five weeks old, but that's a guess. I need someone who knows something about squirrels to help.

My friend found it on a golf course in pouring rain a couple days ago. She said she wasn't going to take him, but he'd been there at least since the start of her shift, four hours.

I've been giving him puppy formula every four hours, and he WAS doing fine. Yesterday he stopped eating, and today he's very weak and constipated. Since he won't eat the formula anyways, I've been giving him water.

I've been helping him toilet because he won't go otherwise(and if you don't know what that means, you might as well not answer the question because you know nothing about squirrels), and I have him on a towel on a hot water bottle in a covered cage.

He's also VERY skinny. He was when he was dropped in my lap, and he still is.

Also, he's got several hard 'loops' in his stomach. I'm thinking that's his full intestines. I don't know what to do.

All the vet's offices are closed, and so are the wild-life rehabber's.

So I just need to hold him over until tomorrow morning when I can call someone.Emergency! I've got a dying baby squirrel on my hands!?
Well done for taking him in.

Keep doing what your doing and when the vets is open then take it in.

Hope for the best as you are doing the best you can.Emergency! I've got a dying baby squirrel on my hands!?
Just what you're doing is very good. You should get an incubator If you can. You are basically doing all you can do. Just hope for the best. Good luck.

    %26lt;3 I luv hamstrz
Is there an emergency vet in your county. Call them or the Humane Society for help. Otherwise your doing the best you can Good luck
wat i would do is warm a towel and wrap him up there and massage him. and try to feed him as much as possible.
if he's not eating try feeding it bread and milk mixed together
    RSPCA???
I'm not sure what will hold him over. If he's having a digestive problem maybe some plain yogurt will help. What would be best is to find a 24-hour vet in your area or an animal hospital. In my area a group of vet clinics in our area take turns staying open 24-hours for emergencies. Maybe some of the vets in your area do the same? Also, I would just try calling a wildlife rehabilitater anyways even if it's late. I'm sure they will be more concerned with the dying animal than the fact you called them during off hours or late at night. Also, if you happen to know a vet's home number it's very helpful. I would just call around and hope. Lots of time the good vets offices won't turn away an emergency.

I have chinchillas and we feed them ensure to hold them over in emergencies. They seem to like it. We also give them nutri-cal to gain weight. It's a high calorie supplement with many vitamins. You can buy it at petstores and vet offices. I would try those if you can't find a vet or anything. Even if it's past hours someone still might be there. Just try anything possible. Poor little guy. I hope it all turns out alright.

Remember to keep him warm. He could be getting too warm. I would make a pouch and carry him around with me. Remember he must be fed atleast every hour to be safe.

Is it ok to touch a baby squirrel? If not, what diseases should I keep in mind?

Friday I found this baby squirrel abandoned after the construction workers destroyed a squirrel den, so I decided to take him in and nurse him abck to health until ready to go into the wild. Hes 5 weeks old right now, only thing is, I have touched him slightly without gloves but im curious if its ok to touch this squirrel? I know how rodents can carry some diseases, but I wanted to help this squirrel. Right now hes built his strength back up, he just hasnt opened his eyes yet (hes too young)Is it ok to touch a baby squirrel? If not, what diseases should I keep in mind?
No, it is not okay. For starters, there's rabies (hydrophobia is actually a symptom of rabies, not some separate disease). Then, there's the wonderful disease that rodents are known to carry those in the know call ';The Bubonic Plague.'; Your history teacher most likely called it ';The Black Death.';Is it ok to touch a baby squirrel? If not, what diseases should I keep in mind?
    Diseases

In general, squirrels carry no diseases that are easily transmitted to humans. It is subject to rabies; however, rabies in squirrels is very rare. Any squirrel that is exceedingly aggressive, lethargic, has trouble moving, or is immobile should be avoided.
This website says that it's not good to try to raise baby squirrels by yourself, because they usually die. They have a link you can click to contact people who have successfully raised and rehabilitated baby squirrels.
    You are doing well!

I wouldn't worry about any diseases from this squirrel. Basically, it hasn't had a chance to catch any; and if it had, it would have died by now. If it seems in good health, don't worry.
squirrels may spread plague and Tularemia
    rabbies and hydro phobia
    Gloves would be safer.
I'd wear gloves just to be safe.

Ive been taking care of a baby squirrel whos mom was killed after a hurricane How do I make him un-constipated?

We found him two days ago, and all we had at first to feed the poor thing was skim milk. He was dehydrated and freezing, so we fed him that for one day, only to find out the next day that milk is the LAST thing you're supposed to give them. We took him to the pet store and bought him some puppy formula and that's what he's been eating since, but he's only pooped once since we've found him on the first day. I'm so worried about him! Please tell me if this is normal or if there's something we can do to help.. also we know about having to stimulate them to go to the bathroom and we have been, and he's peeing just fine.. but I think the baby is constipated :( please help.Ive been taking care of a baby squirrel whos mom was killed after a hurricane How do I make him un-constipated?
I would take him to the vet. A vet will treat a squirrel - but call first to make sure. He probably needs some fiber in his diet. We were told to feed our dog canned pumpkin, which we mix in his food, this helps harden the stool.

What should I do with a baby squirrel?

i found a baby squirrel that was on the verge of death, it could barely walk, it had fleas, it was basically desperate. i know that they are very dependent on the mother, and it having fleas is a sign that it has been without a mother for days. i'm guessing its nest was in some trees that were recently cut down. anyway, i've been feeding it puppy formula and it walks around and stuff now, and it sleeps a lot. but when i'm not holding it, it follows me around and climbs up my legs. it wants me to hold it all the time and i'm afraid that i won't be able to release it as an adult because it's too dependent on humans, but it is definitely to young to survive on it's own right nowWhat should I do with a baby squirrel?
I've actually raised a squirrel - I also found him on the verge of death and nursed him back to health. When he was very young, he did a lot of the same behaviors you're describing. It's natural for a young animal of any kind to cling to and want attention from his provider (you). But it's also natural that at a certain point in their development these clingy behaviors will grow into independence and self-sufficiency. When my squirrel neared adulthood, he got extremely skiddish, jumpy, and cautious of me. I took it as a sign that he was ready to try things on his own. So I set him loose in my back yard. For two or three weeks, he would come back to visit and be fed. Eventually, he got to a point where he would only come so close and wouldn't allow me to touch him. Nature will take it's course if you allow it. He'll know when it's time to grow up and be a big squirrel, so don't worry that you're inhibiting him or harming him in any way. You saved his life! What should I do with a baby squirrel?
at this point you should find someone to adopt it.
I agree with Donna on this. Its too late to let it go in the woods. But if you have a yard than maybe you can build it a little house and keep it out back when it gets older. Im sure you could find someone to adopt it if its as people friendly as you say. If i could take it i definatley would but i am in an apartment without a yard. You can also give it to ASPCA. They would be willing to do what they can for it. I hear they make decent pets though. Make sure you get it checked out before it becomes a little more aggressive and goes around children.

  • How slow should you feed a baby squirrel that is less than ten days old? They've been making clicking sounds.

Help? How slow should you feed a baby squirrel that is less than ten days old? They've been making clicking sounds.
The advice given is correct, about every two hours, night and day. I have to tell you my story. A baby squirrel fell out of his nest in my back yard a few years back. His eye's weren't even opened and he had a little blood coming from his nose. I thought he probably had internal injuries and would die but still, I feed him baby formula with a pinch of peanut butter added (why? because I would feed his mom peanuts and I thought it must flavor her milk and the baby would feel closer to mom). The momma squirrel came to my back door and I brought the baby out to her, she seemed content that it was being looked after, she had 3 others. We cared for this baby all summer, taught it how to forage, jump, everything we could imagine it's mom would teach it. When it was old enough and a good enough climber we would let it go in the tree it was born in. It would play there all day but come down and crawl in it's cage at night. It even started fixing the hole in the old nest. The mom and babies had long since abandoned the nest. One day while out a big rain storm came, the baby squirrel didn't come down to it's cage that night but chose to stay in the tree nest. The next day he was wild, never wanting to go into the cage again. It would climb down the tree and sit on the branch with my sons, but would not let them pick him up. Three years later he still lives in that tree and still visits us whenever we're out in the yard. True story I swear! How slow should you feed a baby squirrel that is less than ten days old? They've been making clicking sounds.
Are you a squirrel? They don't need humans help at all.

the clicking sound is it dying because you took it out of it's natural habitat...

You may not know it but you have doomed that poor animal

by messing with it...It's mother should provide for it until

it is old enough to fend for it's self.

If it fell from a tree or you took it from a nest it spelled out the end for the animal....they are wild animals...do you know many

people with a squirrel for a pet....NO!! because they can't live in captivity..

Hope it don't carry Lice or Rabies.....let it go free.

Next time don't scare off it's mom...

It is a small animal , They run away when approached

They don't defend there nest they run for there lives..

.no Animal shelter/clinic/place would tell you to bring an un domesticated animal inside.

You should have left it alone....

Mark my words it is already dead and it died the minute you took it out of the tree.

I will look back at this question in 2 weeks and I bet it died days before.
    tree rats
about every 2 hours feed them baby formula they are clicking because they want their mom
If these are domestically bred pets, you need to contact the breeder for advice, or take them to an experienced exotic animal vet.

If these are wild squirrels that you have ';rescued'; you need to contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. You can find one here: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact.鈥?/a>

These people have the specialized training to care for sick, injured and orphaned wild animals. They also have the required state and federal licenses that are needed to keep wild animals in captivity, even for a short time, even for the purpose of saving them. edit: In additional details, you stated ';I called the Wildlife Rehab center, and they said that I could infact raise the squirrels and only have to bring them if I tire of caring for the squirrels.'; I don't know what kind of place you called, but they are wrong. In order to keep these animals and care for them, you must be a licensed rehabilitator, and then you can only keep them until they are healthy enough for release.

I believe a squirrel will not eat when not hungry so just give it what is in this article just very small pieces..i think when they are this small its the size of the food not how fast.
ok get one of those tiny bottles that you can get t pets mart and poke a hole in it with a needle. Then put goat milk in it and warm it for about 10 seconds. (test it on your wrist to see if it's the right temp) then just barley stick it in its mouth.

Hope that helped (my freind had a squrrel and we both took care of it.)

oh and if they click that means there mom sick (need there mother)

If you move a baby flying squirrel's nest will the mother abandon them?

found a flying squirrel's nest in deer stand %26amp; need to move it help!!If you move a baby flying squirrel's nest will the mother abandon them?
Baby Squirrels are generally born 2 times a year, April/May and Aug/Sept, babies leave the nest between 12-14 weeks of age. It may not be wise to move the nest because the mother may abandon them due to stress (not necessarily the smell, babies have been reintroduced after human handling without problem) If the babies are molting they are likely nearing adolescence, at which time they usually leave the nest anyway, so I guess it's your call.If you move a baby flying squirrel's nest will the mother abandon them?
Yes, there will be a human smell to the nest that you move and the mother will leave the nest and babies behind.

Mothers of baby animals are very in tune to what or who may have touched the nesting place of their young. If in any way they suspect something out of the ordinary they will indeed abandon the nest. I take care of abandoned and wildlife left behind.
yea the mom will abanded the babys

How can I save this baby squirrel?! about to die!?

Tonight my dogs were barking outside so I went to see what they were doing, they were playing with a baby squirrel and hurting it! I yelled at them and put them inside and got a flash light, I went up to the squirrel and it is still breathing. I went inside thinking theres nothing I could do. So its been an hour and I went out again hoping it hopped away or something, It is still breathing very fast and is curled up, I feel so bad for it cause it must be suffering in soo much pain! I think it might have broken bones or something cause one of my dogs picked it up in its mouth and dropped it. Is there anything I can do for it!? It is sooo sadd :( He looks soo scaredHow can I save this baby squirrel?! about to die!?
find out where your nearest wildlife center is. call them, or if you can, put on a pair of thick gloves (i'm not sure how old you are, you might need to get your parents help) and put him in a small box with some soft towels, and take him to your nearest wildlife center.

you can call 411 if you're not sure where a center is. just ask the operator to find you the nearest one, and they will connect you.

    most are open 24 hours.

Call a wildlife rehabber. They can take care of him, and return him to the wild.

    Thanks for caring,

    Good luck!
put it out of it's misery, don't let it suffer

My dad just caught a baby squirrel. What are its chances of surviving if we let it go again?

We had a squirrel in our loft, till we caught it the other day. We thought it was pregnant when we caught it, so instead of killing it (like everyone told us to do) we let it go in the forest.

It turns out that it WAS pregnant, but it had already had its babies in our loft. It only had two, and we already caught one of the babies and let it go in the forest about 2 miles from our house.

Now my dad just caught the other baby, after he found his dog attacking it in the garden. We're not sure how badly it's hurt, if at all, but it's in shock. My dad wants to drive it to the woods asap.

What are its chances of survival there? Would it be kinder just to kill it now, or keep it for a few days and feed it until it's recovered, then release it? Or just release it now?My dad just caught a baby squirrel. What are its chances of surviving if we let it go again?
ZERO chances sorryMy dad just caught a baby squirrel. What are its chances of surviving if we let it go again?
    ZERO!

    Kill it immediately.
Well it depends on how much of a baby it is.

My cat caught a baby chipmunk last year and was tossing it around for a while. I got the poor thing away from my cat and the thing still lives in a tree outside my house. Squirrels and chipmunks are tougher than a lot of people think....so depending on just how big the squirrel is he might have a good chance of living on his own.
Call your local Humane Society or, if you have one, an animal sanctuary. I found a baby squirrel on my lawn last year and took it to the sanctuary where they nursed it back to health and then released it. Plus you always have to worry about contracting rabies from these rodents. I think if you release it that another animal (hawk?) may have him for lunch.
    hey hun

well the chances are not very high

because **** so young im so sorry

    x
zero, the mother will find it again but smell human on it and abandon it.

Tough call, nurture it best you can.

What to do with abandoned baby squirrel?

we found a baby squirrel in our yard. he seems rather skinny. his tail is not fluffy, but rather long and gray. we were told not to pick him up (because that way he would never grow up in the wild), but we gave him fruit on a clear plate (manderine oranges and blueberries). It seemed as if he didn't know how to eat. we're going to try to feed him almonds now. when we go out into the yard, he follows us around. he keeps crying out but i'm certain his mother is gone because he doesn't have a nest and we haven't seen his mother. it's been two days now. What to do with abandoned baby squirrel?
I found this website and was curious myself, if I was in the same situation. Hope this helps........http://www.ehow.com/how_4469374_take-car鈥?/a>What to do with abandoned baby squirrel?
umm well stop feeding it cuz it could become dependent of u and it would never make it in the wild or release it when its old enough to be on its own or keep it as pet 鈽?jk
Take him to a wildlife rehabilitation center.

Tips on caring for a baby squirrel?

My friend and I have decided to take on the task of caring for a baby squirrel.

We don't know what to do. We are trying to get it to bottle feed, but we're not sure how to go about doing this. Could you use a surrogate mother, such as a cat?

Any help would be appreciated. :3Tips on caring for a baby squirrel?
    I can help you.

I never had one either until last week- but I got loads of helpful information on the internet.

The cat brought him home and he's about 4 weeks old, a grey.

I attempted to help him find his momma, but after 2 or 3 hours they give up and would just kill it if they found him.

Its illegal to keep them as pets, and honestly why would you want to?

But, he cant fend for himself- so we've been bottle feeding him with a tiny tiny bottle found at the pet store, pedialite for half the day (he was dehydrated, but not for more than 24 hours) and Puppy formula after that.

    We use Just Born.

They say to mix it with water and whip cream, but mine eats it without just fine.

Do not give it human milk. It doesnt digest it properly.

Make sure that they are warm when you feed them, and you do not feed them cold formula either. It should be at least room temperature!

at that age, 4 weeks is what i have the experience with- they feed four or five times a day every four hours, and not past 10pm- and you have to take a qtip to their privates after each feeding because they cannot relieve themselves on their own, just yet- so you gotta make them go to the bathroom each and every time.

We just get a tissue and sort of feather that area with one and if done properly they will relieve themselves on it and the tissue just absorbs it.

Also, they gotta be warm at night, so we heat blankets up with a heating pad, on low.

Do not use Towels, you'll figure out why as soon as you use them, their nails get stuck.

Once they get to a certain age, and refuse the formula- you feed them cheerios, unsalted nuts, some fruits and veggies and water.

If you need any more help, I'd be happy to help out!

Oh and if the squirrels eyes aren't open yet, keep them out of sunlight. Don't handle them too often or they'll not be able to make it in the wild.

He/she should be ready to be on his own by springtime!Tips on caring for a baby squirrel?
I just became a surrogate mother to a baby squirrel saturday

and they are just like any baby creature, cute and cuddly, but require alot of care. I went on the internet first and researched any information available before taking on the task. Very important is not to feed them human milk, cause the can't digest it and will most likely kill them. Cat milk or Puppy milk can be found at a good pet store. It's kind of expensive, and only keeps 72 hours, before it has to be thrown out. A friend suggest I look for goats milk in my grocery store, it will probably be cheaper since it is easier to come by if you get the picture....I will always wonder how they get cat milk from a mother cat.?? Pumps, ya think?

One person has already given you some pretty good advice and somethings I learned myself from their answer.

I raised two other squirrels before, but they had already opened their eyes and were futher along in development, so this one will be a challenge for sure. Good luck to you and the little one. I still wonder what I will do when it time to release him...I named him Bud.

Here is a helpful link: http://www.mary.cc/squirrels/foundababy.鈥?/a>
your friend should know better. for one it's illegal for her to care for this animal. she needs to contact her local wildlife rehab center. that is the squirrel's best hope for survival and rehabilitation and chance for being successfully returned to the wild. where it belongs.
Why the hell did you take a baby squirrel?

  • How can i obtain a squirrel that is a baby so i can have as a pet?

*crosses her arms* Well, squirrels are NOT pets and aren`t demesticated,go get a dog...*pouts* If you insist of getting something squirrel-like (can`t blame ya the tails and eyes are hard to resist I`m sure) then go with the suger-glider option. But really, squirrels aren`t to be taken in as pets unless absolutly unadle to live in the wild. When older they have a natural instinct to wanna get out and free. Can you blame them? How can i obtain a squirrel that is a baby so i can have as a pet?
cute as they are im not sure they make good pets have you heard of sugar gliders? research them online you can special order them at most pets stores they are marsupials and look similar to a squirrel, like to be held and are very cute. How can i obtain a squirrel that is a baby so i can have as a pet?
I had to foster three baby squirrels back in 2000, when my poor excuse of a boyfriend cut down a tree in our yard that had a nest in it,in which it contained three babies, I had to research everything I could about them to raise them and for properly releasing techniques, I did become very attached after keeping them for 12 weeks, but I knew they were a wild animal no matter if I kept them in my house or not. I do not think it would be a good idea for you to get attached to something that will eventually leave you without notice one day. No matter how much you have to do with the animal they will always have wild instincts they belong in wide open trees and nature.

I just found a baby squirrel...looks like he's dying.....? Keep reading for the dog question.....?

I was outside alittle while ago and saw that my cat was ';playing'; with something so I walked over and there he had the cutest little baby squirrel I ever saw. He is still breathing but his eyes are closed. I put him in a box on top of some towels and put a little towel over him. I also put a couple drops of water into his mouth with a tiny dropper. Is there anything else i should be doing? Do you think he will survive?? My daughter is all upset over it, I just keep telling her that God might take him back to heaven tonite. If anyone has any advise I would be grateful to hear it. Peace and God bless to you all.

YES, I know this is in the dog section but this is where i am mostly and I know there are alot of caring people here. And if you really want a question pertaining to a dog, here it is....what dog name would you call this little guy??I just found a baby squirrel...looks like he's dying.....? Keep reading for the dog question.....?
Hey there its me. Try some can milk if you have some if not use regular milk, try to get it warm. Just hold the dropper in your hand for a few min to get it warm. If it makes it till morning try to find a rescue center that takes wild animals.I just found a baby squirrel...looks like he's dying.....? Keep reading for the dog question.....?
if he lives through the night then in the morning you should take him to a local pet store who has lots of expirience or maybe even a vet and find out what you can do to treat and find out something a baby squirel would eat besides nuts and put some water in there or maybe even milk... thats the best you can do for now

    Good Luck!!!!
Treat him just like you would a newborn pup; with puppy milk replacer every 2 hours or so, and a nice warm environment. I agree that his chances of survival are pretty slim, as it sounds like he could be in shock. If he's still alive in the morning then I'd contact your local wildlife center/humane society and see what further advice they can give you.
    Fuzzy.
you might take it to the humane society. they can help. good luck
    I'd call him Fido.

The main thing with baby animals is to keep them warm. There have been several times when we've had to take care of baby rabbits (my sister and I had the unfortunate experience of having our 2 ';female'; rabits breed..not fun) because the mother had attacked them and they were injured.

Here are some things you can do...first of all, if you have some gardening gloves or heavy leather gloves..wear those when handling this little guy...getting bit and having to go to the doctor not so fun...and check for any spots that are severely bleeding. Next, keep him warm by using a waterbottle heated up in the microwave and covered with a towel, an electric blanket or near a lamp (but not enough to blind him). If his temperature is really cold, get a ziplock back, wrap him in a washcloth etc and put him in there (leave it open of course) then dip him in warm (not boiling) water.

Next, for the open wounds, GENTLY blot them to get as much dirt ect out, then use a SMALL amount of neosporin...if necessary. Then just wait.
Most vets don't have a license to treat wildlife, but if you look in the yellow pages for an emergency vet, you can try calling them and see if any of them will take an injured baby squirrel. He really needs medical attention, and at the very least, the care of an experienced wildlife rehabilitator.

If you can't do any of that until morning, you can go out to a grocery store and buy some unflavored pedialyte and try feeding that to him in the syringe to keep his energy up. Also, get a hot water bottle and put it in the box with him, or place a heating pad on the low setting underneath the box to keep him warm. If he makes it until the morning, you really should get him to a vet.
You should try to find a rehabilitator in your area to give the squirrel to. Most states don't allow you to keep wildlife unless you have a special permit. Baby squirrels are hard to raise, but you should be feeding it baby formula. Keep using the eye dropper and be sure you feed him slowly. If you see milk bubbles coming out of his nose, you are feeding him too quickly and the milk is going into the lungs instead of the stomach. You will need to feed him about every 2 hours or so, or when you see him begin to move around. Keep using towels and replace them as they get soiled. Keep one over him as well, as they like to tunnel into things. He's probably just a newborn and that is why his eyes are shut. Don't feel bad if he dies, as their mortality rate is high when seperated from their mothers. You could try looking up wildlife rehabilitors in your phone book to see if there are any near you or your local wildlife conservation office.

Question about feeding a baby squirrel?

my husband works in tree services. yesterday he bought home a baby squirrel he found on the ground alone. he watched it to see if the mother would return, and she didn't. so he bought him home. i have looked for a wildlife rehab center, but the closest one is 2 hours away. i have been looking up info on how to care for him every since. i have got everything i need. but i have a question, when feeding him with the syringe, do i need a nipple over it. will the hardness of the plastic hurt his mouth? any tips on how to feed them would be great. thanks!Question about feeding a baby squirrel?
Nope if he takes it without a nipple then you don't have to worry about it. You just have to do what ever it takes to get food into him.Question about feeding a baby squirrel?
Depends on his age, weight etc. If he is unable to urinate or defecate, you will have to stimulate him to do that. You'll also have to make sure his fur stays clean. He may have fleas or other parasites that require immediate attention. If very young, feed him laying on his tummy, with the syringe tilted for least amount of air. Watch for aspiration (choking, sneezing, too much milk!) If this happens turn his head down and wait for all fluid to drain from his lungs. At different ages, they will begin to care for themselves, clean their own fur etc. It is important to know his age as to properly care for him.

He is better off at the rehab centre, his nutritional needs vary from day to day, and best determined by those with experience. Do they have a vet/animal hospital pick up centre near you? Unfortunately, if not fed according to a strict schedule and the correct mixture of replacement milk and possibly solid foods (again dependent on age, weight) he is at risk of serious deformities, or malnutrition with an inexperienced care giver. I understand that your heart is in the right place, but it is in his best interest to be cared for by animal rehabbers, who will often allow you to monitor his care and allow you to participate in his release. Many wild animals die in captivity because of stress. Please take him to the experts.

I have a sick baby squirrel?

so yesterday i was outside and there was this squirrel looked like any other...but a baby. i was looking over him for about an hour and nothing happened, so i took him in. he was fine this morning and yesterday, he ate nuts (hes like 8 weeks old). and then when i came home from school he looked sick and wouldnt move (he wasnt dead) and throughout the day my dad was checking on him! i got him some kitten milk and he seems to be taking it well... but what else should i do to get him back to health, until he goes to a squirrel rehabilitation center (spelling?)I have a sick baby squirrel?
Stop feeding it kitten milk!! I can't stress that enough!

My mom is an animal rehaber. She can tell you exactly what to do but for now stop feeding it! Its very important because the nutrients in kitten milk is not what a squirrel needs. My Mom uses puppy milk but if the squirrel is dehydrated then it doesn't need any kind of milk but pedalite that use you for human babies. Anyway call 770-888-3987 ask for Jacquelyn Parton she is a licensed Wild Life Rehab and she will give any advice or even take any animal anytime no questions asked no cost to. I really hope this helps.

Names for my rescued baby squirrel?

A family member found a cute little baby that was attacked by a cat. She is a spunky girl that is coming along great, and her wounds are healing very well. My sister, knowing we have lots of land and experience in animal rehabilitation, asked us to take her in. Have any ideas of what we should name her? I just can't think of anything that fits.

How old is this baby squirrel I found? How do I take care of him?

I am a victim of hurricane Ike that recently destroyed parts of houston. I am one of the lucky people here. As I was dragging limbs off the roof of my house I found this baby squirrel calling for the mother. We found the nest he lived in and it was part of the fallen tree. I warmed him up as soon as possible and found out he had small teeth. Looks like his teeth may just now be coming in. He's probably 4 or 5 inches in length from head to beginning of his tail. Hes real good about latching on to me and balling up to keep warm, but he won't climb. We tried putting him back on a tree to be free but he wouldn't climb. (He's real good about climbing all over me however) I tried feeding him a sunflower seed with out the case and he wouldn't take it. I'm not sure if I should give him regular milk or maybe I should dilute it a little. I read something about giving pedialite, but our resources are limited here because of the hurricane. (I decided to call the baby squirrel Ike) maybe I should start off with apple sauce? I'm taking any suggestions right now, thanks :)How old is this baby squirrel I found? How do I take care of him?
Believe me it is REALLY HARD to keep baby squirrels alive!! If you dint have pedialite give him a mixture of 1 qt. water, 1 tsp salt, and 3 tsp sugar. DO NOT OVERFEED HIM!!! ive him about one cc of milk every 2 to 3 hours!

It worked great for my baby squirrel! If you can somehow try to give him puppy formula, but I know with how bad things are down where you are.. I live in the great TX,but up north and it made the weather go down to the 70's..which for y'all that don't live down here, that is WAY TO COLD for sept. it should e about 98 about now!!!

Dont go to the vet they will put it to sleep! I would feed it milk out of a pet nurser bottle
iOk. First off is to warm him up by putting a heating pad under the enclosure you have him in. Then get some esbilac at pet store if you can and a bottle or syringe with needle off and feed him that. If he is starting to get teeth may feed him some cheerios, small nuts, grapes and apple. If the nest is not completely destroyed or the tree can put back and watch if the mom is still alive she will come get him and carry him off like mom cats do if not then you will need to keep him and then call a vet and get referred to wildlife rehabber in your area that will take him and rehab him until ready for release. Can give some pedilyte if seems dehydrated. There is a web site called Chris's Squirrels and more they have supplies and you can call or email her as she is also a rehabber and specializes in squirrels so she can tell you everything you need to know. I would say he is about 6 weeks old if cutting his teeth. feed formula 4 times day and give weaning foods which are cheerios, grapes, nuts not in shell, rodent chow, monkey chow, sweet potato some broccoli beeries. By 14 weeks ready to be on own only if have learned skills to be. Best chance for this little one is with its mom or a rehabber. So glad to hear you are all ok. :),
are you sure its a squirel? it could be a chipmonk but if it is a squirrel, pinch the skin on the back of its neck. if the skin stays peaked standing up it means the squirrel is dehydrated. if you cant get pedialyte try this. i got it from a rat website but i think it should work for squirrels.

If necessary, until you buy the correct formula, for the first day you can give the baby dilute sugar water, made with 1 cup hot water 戮 teaspoon sugar, and 录 teaspoon of salt. Stir until the sugar and salt are completely dissolved. Discard this solution after 8 hours because it can quickly grow bacteria.

i think you should give it to a wildlife center because squirrels are illegal in most states. to take care of it until you can get him to a center, go to this website. it should help you alot. you can also look on the chipmunk page if you think its a chipmunk.

I'm sure your local vet is very busy right now after all that has happened but there should be a wildlife rescue phone number that you can call and they will give you any information you need to take care of the poor thing! My mom found a few baby birds and squirrels when I was growing up and she would always call an animal rescue line and they were always extremely helpful. It sounds really cute; you should take some pictures and post them. Good luck!
first of all lets all take a moment of silence to honor the survivors and those who were not lucky and did not survive ... the best choice is to take it to the vet.squirrels are sorta wild and they can get pretty crazy and dangerous i do not suggest you to keep one but take it to your local animal shelter and maybe they would take it ( i am sure they will)

    EDIT:they may have rabies

  • Do you think this baby squirrel has a chance of living?

Yesterday at 5-6 PM, I found a baby squirrel stuck tightly inside a black tube in the garage. I was able to gently push him out with no harm done, I heard though they must maintain 98-99 degrees or they'll die and I was afraid to kill him. So I set up an aquarium, put 2 blankets in the form of a nest, and used my bearded dragon's old heating pad to give him slight warmth. The amazing thing is, he stopped breathing really fast its at a normal rate now, I was able to feed him foster milk ( the correct kind and brand), and he even survived the entire night and seems more active and alert. do you think he still has a chance?Do you think this baby squirrel has a chance of living?
it sound promising, usually they don't survive the night the fact he's passed that is good sign. Good luck with the little guy I hope he makes it !!Do you think this baby squirrel has a chance of living?
sounds good as long as he's responding its a good sign. once teeth are showing give him some shelled nuts then he can also eat rat chows good luck
sure just keep feeding regularly ( about every 4 to 5 hours) do a lot of research there is plenty out there, and keep him/her warm. that is the most important thing and go get a bottle of rodent or bird Multi vitamin, they sell this at any pet store and mix it in his milk. calcium and magnesium are VERY crucial to there development. but it should be fine here is a site you can check out it is very informative http://users.hal-pc.org/~jbsum/squirrel.鈥?/a>

I just saved a baby squirrel from a dog. What do i do?

Ok so i hear a loud screeching noise on my porch so i go outside and this friendly dog that's been around the neighborhood had caught a hold of a squirrel. i brought it inside and wrapped it in a warm towel. the squirrel looks to be a couple weeks old. it has fur and teeth but i don't know whether to feed it milk or even which kind of milk. if i feed it solid food which solid food do i feed it? the squirrel seems to be friendly and can move around and in fact was trying to crawl a wall when the dog got it. I now have the squirrel in a box and have no idea what to do with it. Please list all the suggestions that i can do because i live in a rural area so its hard to find a wildlife specialist.I just saved a baby squirrel from a dog. What do i do?
    wow. i want a squirrel

squirrels like nuts, acorns, seeds and they also eat grass. water would be a good idea too... i have no idea about the milk thing but you should definitely try it. i would say regular milk... the kind that comes from cows.. the black and white and sometimes brown animals... not choc milk... regular milk that comes from cows... white milk that is regular that u would buy at da store that comes from cows... HAHA! lol... sry couldnt resist.

ummm.... you should prob have a play pen/ cage type thing with grass and wood and nature/ outdoorsy stuff instead of a box.

as soon as u can u should take the witto squirrly to a pet store or vet person... u could prob keep him/her as a pet but his/her natural habitat outside is best.

GL and have fun with yer squirrly. tell him/her that I said HI!I just saved a baby squirrel from a dog. What do i do?
The best I can offer is what NOT to do. Do not give it cows milk.

Get to a local pet store and see what they have local for you. Perhaps kitten formula.
I really hate to take this position but take it to a vets office because all rodent animals carrie zoonotic (transmissiable from animal to people)diease. They will abe able to tell you how to care for it or tell you what to do with it.
go to a wildlife rescue or humane society ASAP

also get kitten formula for it and feed a few times per day. keep him/her warm and get somewhere better than a box to live for now.
ooooo give it to my cuzzen she also has a baby squirrel and she is feeding it dog milk u gotta go to a pet store to get that kind of miik but thats only if u want to keep it

if u dont just let it go..
There's lots of information at these two websites

    go to a pet store
Baby food works for almost any mammal in the short term. I would try to call your closest forest preserve, and see what they can do. A pet shop might not be the way to go, as squirrels are not common pets that they sell. But since the squirrel seems healthy, I might just let it go. Keep an eye out for the dog, put the box on its side outside, and watch from a distance to see what your little friend does. Hopefully he can get back into the full swing of nature, without any harm coming from his contact with humans (although you might made a new friend to put bird seed and corn out for :D)

My dog attacked a baby squirrel?

My dog got hold of a baby squirrel. I yelled at her and she released the squirrel however it seemed to have a broken leg. I was wondering if anyone knows how I should care for the squirrel or if their is an animal rescue close to Rising Sun MD. I love all animals and I know my dog was just acting on instinct but it hurts me when she hurts other animals. My dog attacked a baby squirrel?
I'm sorry it happened, but unless you can get the squirrel to a wildlife rescue quickly it probably will die soon. Where is the squirrel now? It WILL bite out of fear and being hurt so be extremely careful.

My cat once paralized a pregnant squirrel and my dad had to go out with a shovel and kill her so she would not suffer. The back legs were useless and she would have never been able to give birth. My dog attacked a baby squirrel?
Listen, even if you feel bad for the poor squirrel, sometimes the surgery or whatever they do can be extremely dangerous work. They will probably put it down or let it go without help. Since a squirrel is so small, a teeeeeeeeeny tiny splint may be in order, or get a pellet gUn or be be gUn and put it out of this world, pain and all. My kitten caught a fat rabbit one day and bit its neck until it was so badly injured my dad pulled out his hunting gUn and BOOM it was out of its pain. I hope this sincerely helped!
I'm so sorry. I'm finding a Maryland Animal Rescue at 310 Stone Run Drive, Rising Sun, MD but I can't get to the site and I don't have a phone number. It says it's a Wildlife Rescue. That's all the info I can get from where I'm at.. Like I said, I can't get to the site so hopefully, you can get some kind of info from there and call them. Best of luck to you.
I am very sorry that this happened. But i do not live near there and so i have no clue of any animal rescue places. So what you want to do is, open your phone book and search the Yellow Pages for one. What you can do now for the baby squirrel is read this link, and keep you dog away from it.

hope the baby squirrel recovers, and good luck,

I am not sure but u can either take care of that squirell and put a mini cast on it or turn it loose and let it take care of itself. I dont know of a squirrel rescue in ur area.
Why not contact have one of your parents contact one of the wildlife refuges in your area? YOU do NOT take care of the squirrel. Try to catch it, and it'll bite the sh!t out of you. Squirrels can carry many diseases.
PROBABLY LET HER HAVE THE SQUIRREL FOR SOME SWEET DINNER

SQUIRREL WOULD PROBABLY DIE FORM HER WOUNDS

I have an orphaned baby squirrel about 6 weeks old.. when i started to feed him, he started breathing weird...?

He took two slow breaths and wouldn't eat any more and he only drank a few drops of his formula.. do they do this when they are not warm enough?I have an orphaned baby squirrel about 6 weeks old.. when i started to feed him, he started breathing weird...?

Could have gotten it in his lungs.Care for Less Than Five Weeks Old

A baby squirrel less than five weeks of age will require more intensive care than an older orphan. During rehabilitation, keep the animal confined to a small cage containing branches and a fresh water. Even young babies can climb, so do not rely on a box. Keep the young animal warm, but keep him out of direct sunlight.

Feed the baby puppy milk replacement (not human or kitten milk replacement). It can be purchased at most pet stores. Use an eyedropper or a small syringe for feeding. Feed every four hours from dusk to dawn and feed as much as the baby will take, at least 3 ccs. Be sure the formula is warmed to 98 degrees F. Cradle the infant in the palm of one hand and administer the formula slowly. Let the squirrel set the pace.

After feeding, use a moistened warm cotton ball, tissue or towel and gently rub on the genital area. This will stimulate urination and defecation. You may not get results every time, but it will establish a pattern early. This feeding and stimulation schedule should continue until the baby opens his eyes.

Keep household pets away from your baby. You don't want him to become accustomed to pets; this would be dangerous when released to the wild.

Care for Over Five Weeks of Age

Once the eyes are open, continue the milk replacement feeding every six hours instead of four. You can also add various fruits, raisins and dried cereal (Cheerios) to the cage. The squirrel will begin playing with the fruit and cereal, but won't be able to eat much of it. Gradually, your baby will begin to wean himself by taking less and less milk per feeding. You will need to supply clean fresh water for drinking and grooming.

Your squirrel should now be able to urinate and defecate alone so stimulation should not be necessary.

Care at Seven Weeks of Age

Decrease the milk feeding to twice a day, morning and night. Begin offering nuts in addition to the fruit and cereal; offer peanuts and acorns in the shell so the young squirrel can start playing with them and slowly learn how to open the shells. Your squirrel will be teething, so you should provide a hardwood branch to chew on. You should also provide an eight by eight by twelve inch nesting box with a three-inch entry hole. Give him small twigs, straw or bits of cloth so it can try to build a nest. You squirrel needs to have a place to hide as well as sleep. At this time move the cage to the outdoors.

When you see that the young squirrel can open nutshells on his own, the most important part of rehabilitation should begin. In order to survive in the wild and not become a pest or a nuisance, the squirrel must develop a fear of humans and independence. From this point on, keep the squirrel in the cage but DO NOT TOUCH HIM. The next two weeks must be completely hands-off.

After about two to three weeks, keep the cage door open to allow the animal to explore a little. He should be able to develop some independent skills so he won't have to rely on people for food. Continue to offer fruits and nuts in the shells and fresh water.

It may take several days for the squirrel to spend significant time outside the cage. However, at some point, your young charge will not return to the cage. This means your job is done.

You can feed them puppy milk, see site below about aspirating milk.
Baby Squirrels need warmth. I don't know where you are from but where I am it is pretty cold and squirrels don't have young yet. It sounds to me that the little squirrel got the formula into his lung and was having trouble breathing. If the squirrel is 6 weeks old, he really doesn't need to be fed formula. You can start him on nuts (like walnuts, peanuts, pecans, etc. ) and have a shallow dish of water or a water bottle for him. I gave my guys crackers with peanut butter along with a mixture of nuts.

Wild bird seed is also taken. If he doesn't improve with a warming pad, he could be injured internally and there isn't to much you can do except make him comfortable.

Good luck with the little guy but remember if he does survive, he is a wild animal and should be released back into the wild. Some Fisheries and Wildlife people frown on raising wild animals and will confiscate them.
Baby squirrels up to 3 mo. old love any kind of 80 proof brandy mixed with a touch of Rum and white wine and a drop of honey. First mix up a batch of about 1 1/2 qts. of the above mixture, and then drink all but a third of a oz. After getting plowed then try and feed the rest to the baby squirrel and see if that doesn't help.
maybe he took too much on and had to let a lump pass..I am bottle feeding lambs right now and if they go too fast that is what they do,,make sure the milk is warm as your skin, if it is too warm they tend to over eat so do it like skin temp..make sure you offer him some grain or something too..they like toast.lol
