Baby squirrel out of nest. Should I rescue it?

The mom is up in the tree fixing her nest. She has another baby in its mouth. I am wondering if she kicked it out of the nest or if she took it out to fix it. I don't know a whole lot about wildlife. I am afraid to touch it because if the mom has plans of getting it off the ground I don't want her to neglect it because of me. The baby is lying there crying. Its heartbreaking. What should I do?Baby squirrel out of nest. Should I rescue it?
Watch from a long distance. If the baby is there for a long time, like after the mother is finished with the nest or when it starts to get dark, take the baby and keep it in a warm place until you can bring it to a wildlife rehabilitation centre, or read up on everything you can possibly find about squirrels, get any equipment you may need and do it yourself. (probably the route I would go for, as no one cares for animals much around here, and I don't trust them anyway, thats just me.)

This reminds me of those nature shows where a lion cub might be starving to death and they just watch it die because they don't want to ';interfere';. It makes me sick, because humans have already interefered with nature so much that lions and other animals are rare or inbred in some places, but if they just had the sense to take the cub to a wild park and raise it, they would be helping the future of the animal.

Anyway, a little off track there, but I wish you and the baby the greatest success.

Good luck!Baby squirrel out of nest. Should I rescue it?
try and save the baby squirrel
Don't touch it or it will die. FYI it is just a rat with a long tail.
Are you outside beside the tree? If you are, you are most likely preventing the mom from coming down to rescue the baby because she is afraid of you. I would monitor the baby for about 20-30 minutes through a window. If the mom does come down to get the baby, yay. If not, save it.

Good luck.
Yes try to save it.
watch but don't touch!

Who knows anything about baby squirrels?

I JUST RESCUED AN ORPHANED BABY SQUIRREL

AND I'VE NEVER HAD TO RAISE ONE BEFORE IN

MY LIFE. I JUST WOULD LIKE SOME ADVISE %26amp;

TIPS ON IT FROM SOMEONE A LIL MORE EXPERIENCED THAN I.Who knows anything about baby squirrels?
1st: I found out apparently in my state you have 2 have some special license to handle orphaned wild life...whatever...I have raised 2 squirrels now and they are AWESOME :) 2nd: very important..they should not be fed Esbilac (a puppy formula) they should eat KMR (a kitten formula) or a goat milk formula if they are still nursing. Do a search to find out how old your baby is so you know how ofter you should feed..there are many sites with info that will also tell you how to transition from milk to solids and teach them to forage. The most important of all of it...you can not keep this baby forever, your job is to prepare them for life in the wild and from experience...they are so much happier! The squirrels I have raised do still come up to my glass door to say Hi, just no touching! Love them, good luck!

  • I found a baby squirrel!!!!!!!!!?

i dont know what to do with it the poor thing looks starved and i didnt see the mom anywhere so i took it. i looked at pictures and it looks like it around 2 1/2 weeks old. what the heck do i do with the poor thing???? I found a baby squirrel!!!!!!!!!?
try any thing try feeding it chips I found a baby squirrel!!!!!!!!!?
    to the humane society, duh
I looked it up and i've heard that it is illegal to keep a baby squirrel. It says that you should keep it warm until you can find a certified wildlife rehabilitator but I found some instructions. It's like taking care of a baby kitten almost.

Keeping the baby warm means the baby needs an external source of heat. Use a hot water bottle or soda bottle filled with hot water. Wrap a towel around the bottle to prevent direct contact with baby squirrel. Lay baby on towel area, then lightly cover baby with piece of towel to prevent any drafts. You don't want to cook the baby, but give a source of heat he/she can cuddle up to. Ideal temperature is 98.5 degrees. There is a lot involved with taking care of a baby squirrel. You have to be able to feed a minimum of every 2 to 4 hours depending on the age. The baby needs the correct formula (no kitten, human baby formula or homemade concoctions or goats milk). Incorrect types of formula can lead to metabolic bone disease and problems with improper development. You need to stimulate the baby after every feeding or urine and stool backup will lead to bacterial build up in the gut and eventual death.

During week two (two weeks old), the pigmentation of the skin will darken slightly on the head, back and upper portion of the legs. The two-week-old squirrel must still be fed Esbilac formula every two to two and a half hours. An appropriate meal size is between .75 cc鈥檚 and 1.75 cc鈥檚, depending on age.

Go to the second source for more instructions on weeks and when to set it free. I think maybe it is just illegal if you are planning to keep it, not if you are going to set it free. Good luck, hope this helped you!

Take it to the humane society. They can nurse him to health and release him into the wild so he can live a full and happy life. :)
If i was you i would take care of it for a while and if you found it near your home always check for its mom if not then go to the local library and get some books on squirrels. i think baby squirells drink milk so see if he/she likes it.after a while maybe give it to the animal control or such.
    Keep it and tame it.

You actually CAN tame wild squirrels at that age to be pets.
pliz make sure u dont eat it(JOKE)
Keep it and love it. Or take it to the vet. Feed it first and keep it warm in a towel or blanket. Feed it milk or anything else a BABY squirrel might eat.

    NEED HELP!!! Baby squirrel ...?

    *RE-POSTED*

A baby squirrel has fallen outside my house and is lying on the ground. It's young; it has fur, but its eyes aren't open yet. What do I do?NEED HELP!!! Baby squirrel ...?
Put it in a cardboard boxwith like rodent wood shavings or something and keep it there, feed it nuts

and call the local pet rescue center

    or the RSPCA or somethin..

or a vetNEED HELP!!! Baby squirrel ...?
put it in a box,and take it where the neighborhood cats cant get at it,then call your local animal shelter or wildlife rescue center,in the meantime feed it a combination of bread in milk its called mush.
call a vet and see what they have to say
Help it, if possible. Dont leave it out there you Dumba** It will die! But, you need to try to bottle feed it or something!
Sometimes the mom will come and stuff the squirrel in her mouth and carry it back to the nest.
Keep it, and raise it. Seriously. I have a friend who nursed a baby squirrel back to health. don't let it die! Don't give it to animal control. They will kill it. Just make sure it's warm. (but not too warm). besides, it would be awesome. You can say you have a squirrel as a pet!
It's probally asleep or not able to open them yet (it was recently born)
either you just put it back to its nest or rush to the nearest animal specialist
Call animal control! They will know!
You might want to look in the phone book under wildlife rehabilitation specialists. They may be able to take it in to rehab it and set it free, or give you instructions on what to do to attempt to save it.

    You have a big heart!
If its still alive the RSPCA will come and take it and take care of it. Poor little thing
    squirrel?!?!?!!?!?

    WHAT?!?!

    when did this happen?!?

    SAVE THE GREENBACKS!
put it in a box... with a lot of open air... and then call a vet or pet place to help it and you out. DO NOT KILL HIM!
PICK IT UP TO SEE IF ITS DEAD.........THEN PUSH IT IN THE STREET

    Blind baby squirrel, HELP!!!!!!?

cat just brought in a baby squirrel...its not injured far as i can tell, stil alove, but is still blind.........what should i do?Blind baby squirrel, HELP!!!!!!?
Call wildlife services. Check the Yellow Pages for the one in your area.Blind baby squirrel, HELP!!!!!!?
You'll have to nurse it, or take it to a vet. Is there an animal shelter like an SPCA in your area? They should be able to help. If it's too late to call, put some bedding or blankets into a box and put the squirrel somewhere warm.

Call for help ASAP, because it's super hard to nurse baby animals..

Also, it's too late to leave him in the wild. Since you and your cat have touched him, the mother won't take the squirrel back.
look up what u can feed a baby squirrel, feed the squirrel, if its too late to go anywhere make sure its warm and not dehydrated, bring it to a vet in the morning, if they wont take it in take it to an animal rehab. thats all i can think of.
thank you for caring, those other people are saying eat it. thats disgusting!! i would call the vet, even though he will say put it to sleep, or call a wildlife service. goodluck.
take it to your nearest vet or emergency vet or post a craigslist i would take it but i doubt you live in alabama
If you are willing to take care of it you can eyedrop/nosedrop feed it but put milk in it instead. But i perfer you call wild life service
Take it somewhere like a vet or spca place. Until then put it in a nice warm towel in a box or somewhere its comfortable
How do u know that its blind...go to the veternarian and spend 200$

to fix he's broken eyes....What do u think about that
Take it to nature center before it starves.
Keep it warm, call the humane society.
Take it back to the wild.
it needs its mommy. put it back where you found it.
Take it to a vet center

    I found a baby squirrel?

dealing with a baby squirrel right now waiting for animal control to get here gonna be a few hours already got it in a shoe boc with a heating pad and towels and a baby blanket my sister is going to get pedia light now anythgin else i should consider doing for itI found a baby squirrel?
Ignore Nick he is obviously crewl and full of hatred for animals. You are doing everything right for the poor thing. Just be careful it may be a baby but it can still bite. Don't have the heating pad on to high just keep it on low you don't want it to burn up. And becareful it might try to chew on the wire's on it.I found a baby squirrel?
Kill it, put it on a leash, and drag him around town....see how many funny looks you get!
    no

    BABY SQUIRREL ! HELP !?

I found a baby squirrel and i am trying to help it live. I know how to care for it but i was kinda wondering, if the mom squirrel had rabies, will the baby also? I don't know if the mom did but i dont wanna get bit and take any chances. THANKS A BUNCH !BABY SQUIRREL ! HELP !?
I would give it to your local Wildlife center, the major is raising and then releasing wild animals. It will still get to live, but they will make sure it is healthy and doesn't have rabies.

(i beleive that you could raise it, but it will be harder for it to live in the wild again.)

Found an orphan baby squirrel outside...?

its about 2 weeks old, pointers?Found an orphan baby squirrel outside...?
take it to a wildlife rehabilitator. keep it warm with a heating pad on low and do not attempt to feed.Found an orphan baby squirrel outside...?
They sell formula for abandoned babies, that you can buy at a petstore, or at Walmart.

Don't give it cow's milk, it will kill it. They need to be fed lukewarm milk every 3 hours, and then you wait half an hour and rub its belly and genitals with a warm, moist cotton ball (like his mommy would lick) so he goes potty.

If you don't do that, he will die b/c of the toxic chemicals building up inside his body and he can't potty by himself.
Do some reasearch on how to care for it, and put it in a large cage and make sure its comfy, once it's old enough, set it free.

OR you could call animal control.
awww how adorable get it a cage and research them get it all cozy
call animal control? or keep it as a pet!

    a chipmunk
Its definitely a Chipmunk. Squirrels don't have stripes on their back like that and have a bushier tail.

    thats a chipmunk
    it is a chipmunk
    Chipmunk
Chipmunks are a type of squirrel. There may be others with stripes also.
Chipmunk because of the stripes on it's back
chipmunk. definitely. no question. we have both on our back deck all the time. The chipmunk has the stripes.

    I FOUND A BABY SQUIRREL?

my dog found a baby squirrel and my dad just put it on a tree branch even though it was still alive and kicking its feet! Should i take it in and but it in something warm or should i just leave it alone on the tree branch? please help!I FOUND A BABY SQUIRREL?
If you don't see the mother squirrel right there -- take it in, keep it warm. You can even give it some milk to keep it hydrated. Then find a local wildlife rehabilitater. In Virginia, the wildlife rehab site gives you a 1-800 number to call and leave a message. Someone will then call you back and tell you where to take the squirrel. It's a system made up of all volunteers who do great work.

I did this a couple years ago, and the lady who took the squirrel from me was a retired veterinarian, and she showed me about 15 baby squirrels (including flying squirrels) that she was caring for.

I have also done this with a baby raccoon.

Good luck.I FOUND A BABY SQUIRREL?
yes. i just killed a baby squirrel yesterday because it was very sick.. so if i make you help this one it all evens out :)

wait a couple of hours to see if it is abandoned by its mother, if that is the case it doesn't have a chance, so you might as well help it.
Take it for a week then let it go because it would get to attached,I promised I had a squirrel pet.
my dad found a baby squirrel in a puddle he keeped it and then he let it free when he grew
leave it alone and let nature take it's course. they can bite and carry diseases
    adopt it!!!

Feed it milk. Or cats milk. If it wont drink make it. If its cold make it warm.

-put it in a hot room

-and put blankets or bedding if have some in it.

Keep it a live as long as possible.

Keep it in a dark room also. I t makes it cool its mind down
im so sorry but it more than likely is going to die with out its mother trust me i have tried to do that before its a sad sad thing :'( but if you want it tolive call a vet they will know what to do to save its little life :)
hurry it to a vet as fast as you can! dont let it stay like this! keep him warm and stable, wrap him up in a blanket, and hold him in you`r lap while your driving him.
if you cant bring the squirrel to the vet or the vet to the squirrel then call the vet and keep a close eye on your little critter
take it to a vet pronto! then ask her were to take it

    Baby squirrel died....

I found a baby squirrel in our flowerpot.Mom didn't come back for him so I cared for him.Got him warm, hydrated, and started the feeding. I bought the recomended formula.I had him for 10 days %26amp; he was thriving well. Then I noticed his little nose started to bleed, and he didn't want to eat.How could he be perfectly fine one day, and then not the next? Do you think Mom left him on purpose,%26amp; what kind of imparement would make his nose bleed?Baby squirrel died....
You should take him to a wildlife rehab or a vet clinic. Or at least call them, they would have the medical information that you need.

    http://www.thesquirrelboard.com/forums/f鈥?/a>Baby squirrel died....
His Mom didn't come back for him becasue she knew he was sick. She left him to die, because animals don't take care of sick ones. Caring for a sick baby would waste their food and water supplies.

Unfortunately, this is the way it is in the animal world. It is called Survival of the Fittest, meaning that those animals that are weak or sick are left to die (or be eaten by a predator) so that the stronger ones can live to make more strong babies.

Little animals like this are not smart enough to have compassion, which is what YOU have when you tried to care for this animal. Compassion is one of the things that sets men apart from other animals. It IS a good thing to have, but it can be mis-applied.

Animals have a ';sixth sense'; about knowing when a baby is sick, and while it seems cruel, they will leave the baby behind to die, in order that there is more food and water left for the healthy babies.

    Momma Squirel know best . . .

BTW: Bleeding from the nose could indicate either a brain problem, or pneumonia. There is no way to tell, and it would cost too much to have the vet run tests.
It is very likely the squirrel has come in contact with one of many virus or bacteria or fungus that surround humans. We are used to these and for the most part they bother us very little. However, they maybe deadly to animals that do not associate with humans.

This is a tough way to learn that you should not be trying to save critters. For the most part Nature takes care of it's own. Usually when humans interfere, the results are not desirable. Millions of little wild animal die every year in the care of well meaning people. It is really best just to leave the critters alone.

Leave the wild to the wild.

For those that think you can take a wild animal to a vet. Sorry no. You see there are rules prohibiting veterinarians from treating wild animals. Rehabbers more than likely wont help either. There are just too many baby squirrels and not enough people to watch out for them.

Edit: I see one of you is following me around just to give me a negative point. Well, you are wasting your time and behaving rather foolishly. If you cant take advise from a real wildlife biologist you are just plain lost.
It sounds as though it could have been pneumonia. If he lasted 10 days, the mother didn't likely leave it on purpose due to it being sickly. Squirrels have very sensitive digestive systems (never feed them peanuts, for example). I'm not sure if the formula was the best thing or not (really don't know). It sounds like you did your very best. You should be proud of yourself for trying so hard.
Follow the precautions and advices of vet doctor.

I am very much excited about your kind heartedness, take care bye.
mayb outdoor animals cant b touched by humans
take him to the vet now
kill him so he does'nt suffer
you should really take him to the vet....

    his needs the wild life

and its very nice of u to care for the poor thing!!!!!

HELP! We found a baby squirrel !!?

Actually the squirrel found my husband! He was out working in the garden and this little furry critter walked all the way from the tree in the front yard to the garden about 50ft away. I put him back in his tree and he came right back to us. He ate some cat food mush last night and he's still alive and kickin this morning. The HELP is what should I feed the little guy so he can be released into our yard in a few weeks??HELP! We found a baby squirrel !!?
He's out and about he is old enough to survive. If you are really worried toss peanuts in the shell in your yard for him. Do not leave them in one place continue to make himlook. As a treat throw some cereal out there. Ive weined them with peanut butter dog biscuits.HELP! We found a baby squirrel !!?
I have been in touch with rehab folks and they say not to release him until he can open hard shell nuts on his own. Other wise he may not survive. He is very active and acting more and more squirrelly every day.

its not a dog.. or a kid.

sunshine.. thank you for taking advice from rehabbers.. your baby is darling.. and your doing excellent.

i would suggest keeping food outside in your yard and let him come and go as he please. I am sure he has lost his momma and is learning to fend for himself.
    Contact a DNR
( I know Ive already contacted you regarding the squirrel)

the squirrel is doing great... thank god she didnt take other advice! I would like to point out that squirrels DO NOT transmit rabies.. they can however have rabies.. ( if they survive the attack) which usually is not the outcome.. squirrels have a 1/2 gap between the front teeth and the back molars which make it impossible to transmit rabies.. since saliva is how it is transmitted.. (not through a scratch!)

ever had a squirrel spit on you??? I dont think so.

baby squirrels must keep a normal body temp.. a heat source is required... baby squirrels must be fed a proper formula.. cows milk will kill them. goats milk will kill them.. and human formula will kill them. baby squirrels that do not have their eyes open must be stimulated to urinate.. they cannot do it on their own.

so please... before you go giving advice.. please make sure you know what you are talking about... bad advice.. leaves to a dead squirrel.

thank you again for saving the little fella.. he sure is a cutie pie!!!! your doing an excellent job.. and just let me know if you have any questions. ;)
keep him sounds like he will be a neat pet,i aways wanted one.
CALL LOCAL ANIMAL CONTROL. Squirrels, especially

babies, are usually very afraid of humans and will not venture near, even when food is there.

That is a sign of a very sick animal. Rabies is very common in squirrels.

If the squirrel bites or scratches you, you could get the disease and die.
Ideally, the squirrel needs to go to a wildlife rehabilitator.

You could ask for assistance by contacting an animal shelter or animal control for your county or city.

Big city animal controls may not be helpful, but if you are in a rural or suburban county, they probably will.

You can't adequately take care of the squirrel without expert advice.

It will die if you just set it outside, but you also don't know the way to care for it.

An animal shelter (private or public for that matter) might help you or take the squirrel.

    Don't just set it outside.
STOP feeding him, keep trying to put him back in the tree. Unless you know for a fact that the mother is dead. If you must keep it, call the local wildlife rescue. They will tell you exactly what to feed him and how to care for him.
If he's a baby, then you need to first make sure the mom is alive and not injured. If she is, keep the baby. Feed it frozen pecans, birdseed, and an eye dropper of esbalic every 4-5 hours. If it is that friendly and not afraid of humans, take it to a rehab center! It probably needs special care so it will grow up and learn to not keep coming back to people's houses! Remember-keeping any type of wild animal is illegal!

  • Baby squirrel VERY constipated !?

it has worried me enough that I can't sleep. My 3-4 week old squirrel is seriously constipated. He tries and tries to poop, but its really hard for him. Plzzzzz suggest a quick remedy . I shall b very thankful.Baby squirrel VERY constipated !?
this is very important. although a different animal it is very much the same situation. clean out whatever and wherever he/she sleeps. check its belly and see if it is bloated or hard. if it is then it has a bladder infection and it needs to go to the vet the gett medication. i had a rat that had a bladder infection from eating in the same place as it weed. in other words as she was picking up food she must have accidently eaten some paper with wee on it. after a while my rats wee went fluro yellow then blood started to come from her eyes. i took her to the vet after i finally convinced my dad that there was something wrong. she was given medication. it was too late. she died in horrible pain and i will be emotionally scared for this always. if her stomach is bloated take her to the vet.

    good luck

    xxBaby squirrel VERY constipated !?
Baby squirrels are usually not legal to have in captivity. But occasionally an orphan happens... If you can get some pedialite... non flavored.. you can give just a small amount in a syringe with no needle.. If the baby is up to its proper body temp. It should feel warm to the touch... If you feed it with a cold body temp it could kill it. Also once the baby takes in the liquid.. you must use a damp soft tissue or cloth to stimulate the baby's genitals to help it to go potty. Just rub gently with the warm cloth and it should potty . Also call a local rehabilitator in your area. They can assist you more.

I have stabilized many orphaned baby squirrels and then turned them over to the rehab people. And I fostered a squirrel or two in my time.
Offer him some canned pumpkin. If he won't eat it that way, try pumpkin pie filling.

Is it legal to keep squirrel?

Ask a wildlife rehabber, you can find one through local humane org.
Your 3-4 wk old squirrel should be with it's mother or a rehabber. They don't even open their eyes till like 6 wks. And what are you feeding it? The only thing I know they can have is canned dog food.

    Baby squirrel VERY constipated !?

it has worried me enough that I can't sleep.

    Baby squirrel? Is it sick?

A young grey squirrel came up to me today outside and just lingered around me for a while. I did not touch it. My dad came and got really close, and it started to smell his boot and curl into an odd position. All 4 feet together, tail curled up against its back. My dad walked away in case it was going to attack or something. But it kept squinting and lowering its head, like it was sleeping, but then it would open again and stay very still. We went inside and haven't seen it since. Is he sick? And is there anything I can do? Baby squirrel? Is it sick?
Might be a former pet (behavior) or might be a disease, like rabies (hydrophobia).Baby squirrel? Is it sick?
    Yes, it is sick.

Squirrels are naturally afraid of humans, and generally do not approach unless bribed with food -- or they are very very confused.

Squirrels do NOT make good pets, and are next to impossible to ';tame'; or train. The can do ';tricks';, but you don't want one inside. They are VERY destructive, chewing everything they see.

The best thing you can do is to LEAVE IT ALONE. This does not sound like rabies, but since we don't know what is wrong we wouldn't want it to bite you. The tests you would have to take to make sure you weren't infected would be much more painful than the bite.

There is a possibility that it has been poisoned. Squirrels will get into garages and attics and eat rat poison. In this case there is nothing you can do.

Note that ALL animals eventually die, and the smaller they are the shorter they live. Wild squirrels are only good for 2-3 years. It may just be that this one was very very old (for a squirrel).

Whatever the case -- LEAVE IT ALONE!

    Baby squirrel!!! Please Help!!!!!?

ok so we have a baby squirrel and we have all the right stuff and formula he needs. He is only a couple of weeks, still no hair and eyes are still closed. He has been eating very well and has been getting quite frisky. Just recently though like a couple of hours he has seemed to have gotten weaker!! Now he is not wanting to eat! His body temperature is not so warm and he is breathing harder. What should we do?? please help! We can't take him to anyone to get help it is way to late at night for that. Plus we live in the country. Is there anything we can do ourselves to get his energy back???Baby squirrel!!! Please Help!!!!!?

There's a good chance he might have aspirated some milk. He may or may not survive. Keep him warm and offer him small amounts to drink at a time. The opening of the syringe or nipple must be very small for baby squirrels--they are vigorous nursers and often suck too hard, causing this problem.Baby squirrel!!! Please Help!!!!!?
keep him warm maybe with blanket or towel and put it under some light so it can keep warm.Good Luck with the little one
    pretty much no.

For one thing he is a wild animal and although very cute, he can't survive without his mother. And since you have handled it, his mother will abandon him.

By having all the right stuff what exactly do you mean?
This animal needs to be examined by a medical professional.

If this is a pet squirrel that you obtained legally from a reputable breeder, call your vet and ask for advice.

If this is a domestically bred squirrel, and you do not yet have a vet for it, you could also call the breeder you purchesed it from, and ask their advice. If you do not yet have a vet, choose one very carefully. Many vets do not have the expertise needed to deal with exotics.

If this is a wild squirrel that you (or someone else) captured, it is illegal to have it. You need to contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. You can find one here: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact.鈥?/a>

These people have the specialized training to care for sick, injured and orphaned wild animals. They also have the state and federal licenses required to keep those animals for a short time, until they are healthy enough to be released into the wild.

If this is a wild squirrel, please surrender it to a licensed rehabber. If it should bite someone (even a little nip), the health department could take it from you and destroy it to test it for rabies. Also, anyone who is bitten could sue you, and your homeowners insurance would not cover it, as it is a wild animal.
The most important thing you need to do first and all night long, is to keep him warm. Babies with no fur can freeze to death. The best thing you can use, if you have it, is an electric heating pad set on low with a towel folded up on top of it so he's not laying directly on the heating pad. And make sure he can't get out of wherever you have him in..... No matter how young they are, they can still try to climb and he absolutely needs that warmth overnight.

You need to get him hydrated. He can live right now without food but has to be hydrated. The best thing you can give him is Pedialyte formula. He needs electrolyte fluids and make sure it says Lactated Ringers when you get it. You can give it to him with an eye dropper. Usually, they sell it at grocery stores or drug stores if you have any 24 hour ones by you. If you don't have any of that mix 1 qt. Water, 1 tsp salt, 3 tsp sugar and give him that by eye dropper. Pinch his skin though.... if it falls back pretty quick, then that means he's not too dehydrated. The more you hydrate him, the quicker it should fall back.

Keeping him warm and hydrated thru the night though are very, very important. Don't call a vet tomorrow....a lot of them won't handle squirrels...... find a wildlife rehabilitator and they'll be able to help you. Just make sure you call first thing in the morning and get some help. Good luck to you!!
I have been in your situation, although it was an older squirrel, but it was still too young to be away from it's mother. I too had no one who would come out or even help me with what to do. I had called all wildlife rehabs we have here and they all told me they weren't taking anymore or didn't take squirrels. One place told me what to do, what to feed him and then I was on my own. Unfortunately our little squirrel died and we didn't even know he was sick. He was eating and drinking fine, but went to sleep and just didn't wake up.

I would suggest getting a hold of your local animal control and they will give you the number to the wildlife rehabs in your area. Or find a vet, although not likely as most vets don't deal with wildlife. Other than that do your best to keep him warm and get him eat.

Good luck and I hope all turn out good for the little guy!
    Take him to a vet.
How did you find out about what baby squirrels eat and what kind of formula they need? Was this person an expert on the care and feeding of baby squirrels?

The baby squirrel should have been brought to the nearest Wildlife Center for proper care and feeding.as soon as you found it.

It's most likely stressed. The deep breathing is not a good sign that the squirrel will make it.

All I can advise is to keep it warm and comfortable as possible. That's all you can do, unless you have a phone number to contact a Wild Life Center. You could try a vet that has 24 hour service.

If this should happen again, take the animal to a Wild Life Center if you have one in the area (or you may have to travel or get a phone number) to be more prepared. A vet may be able to help.

    Good Luck

  • NEED HELP!!! Baby squirrel ...?

A baby squirrel has fallen outside my house and is lying on the ground. It's young; it has fur, but its eyes aren't open yet. What do I do?NEED HELP!!! Baby squirrel ...?
call a wildlife reserve; they should talk you through it.

if it was me i would pick it up and but it in a comfortable box with out a lid. and wait for someone to come get it.

that's what i did when i found baby birds.NEED HELP!!! Baby squirrel ...?
Animal control time. You shouldn't touch the baby squirrel, no matter what. That squirrel could be carrying a disease that you might not know about. Animal control will know what to do with the squirrel, and unless you want to pick the squirrel up with gloves, I would suggest you to be VERY careful. You have to remember that squirrels aren't really common as pets and are more like to be wild animals. It is very hard to raise baby squirrels from human hands, as they prefer to run freely. If the squirrel seems to stop breathing, honestly, there's nothing you can do. It may be an animal and may look like it needs help, but this is life. All animals get hurt.
call animal controll they might help
U can leave it there, come back, check on it, don't take it to the shelter, because the shelter is for pets, the squirrel is a type of an animal that u see in the neighborhood, i see mines sometimes in my backyard, and when my dog hears it, it barks, if you got a dog, make sure it does not see it on the floor.
If it's still alive and breathing I'd make a call to your local wildlife rescue. They will come out and take the animal and return it where it was found after it recovers..all at no cost to you.

What do i do? i have a baby squirrel?

the baby squirrel is small but it has alot of fur and he got his eyes open already idk how many months it must have but i found it in my back yard i want to call for a animal shelter but mean while idk what to feed the baby squirrel.. soo please help me!!What do i do? i have a baby squirrel?
really if its eyes are open and it is running around then it probably has a nest nearby and was just exploring you should leave it be. the only reason anyone should keep baby squirrels is if is very obvious that they have fallen and are hurt or clearly abandoned. Which is usually not the case most people just assume they are. mom is near buy. This time of year the babies are out of the nest and roaming, They would have been born in July or august and is now fine running around on its own. you should put it back in the tree so it can find its nest. And i am not saying this to be mean i have two that i have had sense before there eyes where open but the only reason i have them is cause their tree was cut down and mom was gone and one was hurt from falling. But that baby is grown enough to wonder and didn't need any help. but if you insist on keep the poor thing check out this site and it will tell you everything you need to know. http://users.hal-pc.org/~jbsum/squirrel.鈥?/a>What do i do? i have a baby squirrel?
You should do the right thing for the squirrel and call up wildlife rehabilitators in your area or call your department of natural resources.

The only thing I can suggest feeding the squirrel is KMR which is a Kitten Replacement formula that you can buy at petstores..maybe walmart sells a generic version of the kitten formula?? and use a needle less syringe, be careful not to get the formula into the baby's lungs or it will die.
It really depends on how old it is.You can try a kitten formula and a kitten nursing bottle,or you can try hamster food, and water. If it is old enough to eat the hamster food you wont need to bottle feed it.
    http://www.mary.cc/squirrels/foundababy.鈥?/a>

The main thing is to keep them warm and hydrated while you look for a wild animal rehabilatator. the link above should be of some help.

Help! My fiance found a flying squirrel baby?

My fiance is a tree trimmer and rescued this little guy after the rest of his family got crushed by the falling tree (I know, I know, so horrible!)

So what do I do with him? What does he eat?Help! My fiance found a flying squirrel baby?
Honestly the best thing you can do with him is to call the wild life Rescue Society and they will either have you bring it to them or they will have someone pick it up.They have everything it needs for its survival and will release it back into the wild when it is old enough. There is to many things that can go wrong trying to raise in on your own from getting proper nourishment into it to protecting it from predictors, such as your cat.Help! My fiance found a flying squirrel baby?
We found a baby squirrel with a broken leg by our house one day. We put him in a small cage and scattered bird seed everywhere. He loved the seed. We also put a small container of water in side. We soon found an animal rescue place that took any type of animal, healed and rehabilitated them. But they LOVE bird seed!
what normal squirels do my great grandfather took in a baby squirel i wasn't born yet and it was about 15 yrs ago! and he took care o a ground hog and he would have a long piece of wood and it would be connected to a tree and to his back pourch and he would feed it and he would give it a bottle of milk or wtaer and give it to him and when it was big enough he would let it go outside and play! and it would come back to himwhenever it want!
I found a baby squirrel last summer. They LOVE milk. Warm up 2% milk in a tiny bottle or a saucer and let him drink it. They also like sunflower seeds without the shell. And also take him in your front or backyard and let him chase you around. Play with him and he will become happier (: Good luck!
Do research on baby squirrels. Find out what their diet is. Make sure to take care of it until it's healthy again.

If you don't like taking care of animals, take the squirrel to a nature center.
Feed him warmed up KMR(Kitten Milk Replacement) which can be found at pet stores.

Then I would start searching for a wildlife rescue organization since it is illegal to keep wild life as pets.
if its really a baby then you can feed it that baby formula stuff

First question. Is it legal where you are to have a ';wild animal'; as a pet. Second question is it really fair to you or the squirrel to keep it in captivity? Third question are you responsible enough to keep this creature if it is legal in your area? Personally I would advise against keeping wild animals as they are unlikely to be fully domesticated even if they were purchased from a shop.

Get that little critter to a wildlife rehabitor. Depending on where you are, it's illegal to keep wildlife.
    go to the vet immediately.
Do not take the squirrel to a vet - vets are for pets and most do not have the expertise needed to care for wild animals, nor do they ahve the proper licenses that allow them to keep a recouperating wild animal.

Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator immediately - you can find one here: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact.鈥?/a>

These people have the specialized training that allows them to care for sick, injured and orphaned wild animals. They also have the required state and federal licneses that allow them to keep the wild animals until they are healthy enough to be released back into the wild where they belong.

It is illegal in most places to keep wildlife unless you have the proper permits, and since you admit you don't know what is wrong with the squirrel, get him to someone who will be able to diagnose and treat him properly.
Get a small hand towel or a washcloth, wrap the squirrel gently in it, put that inside of an open box to transport it. Go to your local vet or ASPCA office immediately!!!!

how old is it? it probably needs it's mother. take it to a vet and see what they can do. keep it warm and bundled up and feed it through one of those little eye dropper type things. wipe the discharge from the eyes, it may have a cold. a cold can be quite serious in animals, so make sure you do take it to a vet. there it can get different shots and injections against flus and colds and they will give it the correct anti biotics. try not to panic and be accepting if it does die. he/she will become a little angel in the sky.My baby squirrel seems to be dyin :S !?
you might want to try to take it to, yes I'm sorry to say, an animal shelter. But in the mean time put a small bowl of whatever you feed it next to it and try to wipe the tears from it's eyes with a towel that has been wetted down with warm water.

    I REALLY hope this helps!!!

    good luck!!! =]
A squirrel is a wild animal it should never be kept as a pet. You could try and return it to the nest it came from but I am afraid it may die anyway.

Call a vet and ask if he knows of any place that would take it and nurse it back to health then release it back into the wild.

Most likely it is missing its family.

    Orphaned baby squirrel?

there was 2 on the road and we managed to save one but the other was run over. He has all his hair and can curl his tail he must be about 6, 7 maybe even 8 weeks old. He came rushing to my feet and I picked him up. He also keeps falling asleep in my arms. We do not know what to feed him and where to keep him until we can get him somewhere more suitable ... if anyone has any experience with anything like this or any advice I would really appreciate it.Orphaned baby squirrel?

Squirrels' diet consists primarily of a wide variety of plant food, including nuts, seeds, conifer cones, fruits, fungi and green vegetation.
Can't release it into the wild now, it'll die. Had you not intervened that's what would've happend. Keep it as a pet or let nature take its course.
call the dept. of game and fish they work hand and hand with organization that provide rehabilitation and re release .its what's best.
try feeding him hamster food or lab blocks and you may want to get a cage for him.......your so lucky!!!!! :) awwwww
when i was a younger i had a pet gray squirrel and kept it till it was ready do go in the wild on its own. there great pets to have but your gonna go nuts if it gets lose in your house... you can try to feet it walnuts that have no Sugar coating or any nut that is in its natural state.. if it don't eat that you can try some milk from the pet store that is for baby dogs or cats.. while your there you should get a nipple and bottle for it.. if you plan on keeping it get a cage. mine was running lose one time used the bathroom on my tv.. yeah it stopped working..

you can keep him till he gets old enough to live on his own.. its animal instinct will help him live in the wild and plus if you take good care of him he'll come back to your house to eat....

if you live near the woods try to get some acorns and walnuts in the wild to start training him for it...

if you have any questions you can contact me through this site and i will help you the best i can i do have pics to prove that i had one if that helps

If your arent interested in helping him, and shooting him is your answer to a viable option, just leave him alone. If he's running around like a puppy then I take it he is perfectly mobile and is taking care of himself. It's possible that someone near you raised him and has let him venture off on his own now. Otherwise I cant explain why he is so docile. If he's old enough to run around, then he should be eating solid foods by now. Why not just enjoy him and bring him a pecan every now and then rather than worry about getting rid of him?

Please try to get it to a rehabilitation, if you can't find one in the area, bring it to your vet. I know these little guys are cute, and you really want to keep them. A grand majority of orphaned squirrels will die if not put into proper care. They need a surplus of nutrients that are in their mothers milk, its hard for us (the general public) to get this at the grocery store. So if you want your little friend to survive, and live a healthy happy life, get her to someplace where she will.

for the best outcome for the baby squirrel, please find a wildlife rehabber in your area to care for it, so the baby can be released back into the wild. websites below. thanks.

I fed my little guy evaporated milk and diluted it with water. Make sure you dilute it enough, if you don't he will get the runs. Also get him untreated peanuts. Take them out of the shell for him since he won't be able to shell them at this age.

A lot of ppl don't recommend the milk I used but it worked fine. My little guy would let me know when he was hungry. If you wait until he crys to feed him, he is a lot more likely to take it without a fight.

Also offer him plain water between feedings. I would love to talk to you about this a little more personally since there is so much to say. You can email me at amber11204@yahoo.com please write the title as baby squirrel.Baby squirrel more questions HELP PLEASE!?
Great job!!!! I just found a juvenille squirrel and read up on them and you can use tissue and rub it over their genital and anus area for a comfort feeling they get and they will release themselves
i found a baby squirrel a few weeks ago and a day later took it to a wild life sanctuary. it sounds like your doing a good job, as long as you keep him hydrated and really warm he'll be fine.

heres a website offering care tips i used:

    www.tampasquirrelcare.org/
You are doing a great job. I love squirrels as well. The fact that he is still around, means you are doing fine. Thanks for caring for God's creatures.
sounds like your doing great just keep up the good work cuase you are doing fine keep me updated i just had to give my baby squirrel to the nature center i raised him until he was about 3 yrs old
sounds like hes doing fine and he should count himself lucky to have such a concerned nurse. just remember wild animals eat when there hungry not like domestic pets who just eat coz its there. good luck and let me know how things go.
sounds like u r doing a terrific job. he's still alive after 25 hrs.and that is an accomplishment in and of itself. Just keep doing what ur doing and when u do get ahold of the sanctuary, don't b surprised if they don't want him. i hope they do 4 ur sake. good luck
HE`S NORMAL IT`S GOOD THAT YOU REALLY ARE THAT WORRIED ABOUT HIM TO POST A QUESTION ONLINE

Where do You Get Baby Squirrels?

I'm getting a squirrel for a pet (YES I AM DON'T TELL ME NOT TO AGAIN) and I want to (and have to) raise it from a baby. I'm willing to go up in the tree if neccesary, but I would rather not. I'm afraid of heights.Where do You Get Baby Squirrels?
It is illegal but it sounds as if you have made up your mind to get a squirrel anyway. It would be dangerous to climb into a tree to get a baby squirrel even if you werent afraid of heights. Your best bet is a small animal trap. You can find them at your local feed and seed store (also called a cooperative), or at a store like Tractor Supply. It is built in such a way that the squirrel enters at one end and presses a lever and the door closes trapping the animal. You can use most any type seed to lure in a baby squirrel. They like sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and corn. You will need a very small trap so the squirrel cant fit through the cage gaps to escape. Place the trap near the base of a tree where you see squirrels playing. They are curious and will investigate shortly after you leave. Be sure to check the cage frequently in hot weather so the squirrel doesnt suffer from heat problems or lack of water.Where do You Get Baby Squirrels?
You should NEVER take and animal out of the wild and try to raise it.

However, there may be some tame squirrels out there. Check with your local veterinarian to see if:

    a) any reputable breeder in your area is selling baby squirrels

    b) if the vet knows how to take care of a squirrel (so that they can teach you and also help you if you have a problem)
If you are trying this in the UK you will be breaking the law!

    Simple as that!

The best way to befriend squirrels is to feed them! They will quickly lose all fear of you, allowing you (on payment of scran) to handle them.

When my son was a baby, we lived in an area rich in Red Squirrels. They used to play happily around the boy in his bouncer......... an idyll!
Don't forget to mention your pet taken from the wild to your doctor when you're dying from tularemia or some other such illness.

Wild things are best left that way, for them *and* for you.
Squirrels belong in the woods. They are independent animals. Not your furry companions. Besides they HATE people. They run away if your get so close as of 20 feet distance.
squirrels are a waste...unicorns are better and easier to find...just ask my homeskillet darci whos lathered in gravy!! teehee =D
you don't get them, you leave them in the wild where they belong!!!!!!!!! Don't disturb mother nature, or she will disturb YOU!
    IILLEGAL.

But I want one too! :)
    ok... I gotta know... WHY????

Do baby squirrels carry any diseases of any particular concern?

I captured a baby squirrel that was injured (brain injury most likely) and am going to turn it into a wildlife rehab center in the morning - he seems to be calmed by petting with a paper towel. Is there any harm to myself from touching it with my bare hands to pet it? I'm pretty sure they don't carry any diseases of any concern as long as I don't like, stick my fingers in my mouth or anything but if anyone knows anything about this sort of thing let me know :)Do baby squirrels carry any diseases of any particular concern?
Squirrels do NOT carry rabies, nor does any other rodent, including rats, mice, hamsters, gerbils, or guinea pigs, nor do rabbits, even though those are not considered rodents. (The booklet put out by The Health Department stating this also says that no post-exposure shots are ever necessary after having been bitten, even though a lot of unknowing people do like to perpetuate this myth. -- Bitty baby squirrels don't bite anyway.)

Squirrels are virtually disease-free and are very clean little animals (though they do make big messes when they are older, IF they are healthy). They do NOT carry diseases transmissible to humans. They can get abscesses in 10 days to 2 weeks from biting each other but do NOT infect people when bites are sustained from mishandling the older babies or adults.

Cats do NOT infect squirrels, either, so no antibiotic is EVER necessary if a cat finds one, baby or adult, and brings it home. Sometimes the small scrapes or scratches found on babies are caused by his fall from the tree and what twigs he hit on the way down, not necessarily by the cat.Do baby squirrels carry any diseases of any particular concern?
This is a dangerous and ill-informed answer.

    Any mammal can get rabies.

    Source: http://www.cdc.gov/

There are many diseases they could have, just be careful of being bit and keep your hands washed.

Give him some blankets, paper towles,or towls, anything he can burrow in, and put a light on him that gives off heat, to help keep him warm.

Don't give him anything to eat or drink for 24 hrs. When they are stressed their bodies need time to relax and recuperate, that's why you wait 24 hrs. After 24 hrs. give him some gateraide(I'm serious- a wildlife rescue told me to do this with an injured baby squirrel.). You can use a dropper or an animal baby bottle if it is big enough(you can find these at any petstore or even walmart). Be ready, it doesn't take gateraide long to work. He will get very frisky quickly. Good luck with him.
They can carry rabies, but they are not common carriers. Fleas on squirrels can carry the plauge..but if there was an outbreak in your area...believe me..you would know about it. As long as you did not get bitten...you should be fine.

    ======================================鈥?br>

No. Squirrels are not a primary threat of transfer of rabies, raccoons and

skunks are the most common carriers, but any mammal can carry rabies,

squirrels can and will bite people, so there is a danger, even if perhaps

    smaller than with other animals.

    J. Elliott

Above is from ';Ask a Scientist';...which states that ANY mammal can carry rabies..in response to the above answer.
I've raised baby squirrels, and turning them into a wildlife rehab center has to be done, but I never caught anything, nor did my cats (blondemom is dead-on). Love the little critters.
Their bites can hurt and can become infected, but they don't carry any diseases you need to worry about. They do have fleas, which can spread to your pets. They can become infected from a cat bite...and need antibiotics. I've seen it plenty of times. Keep him warm and get him to rehab asap.
Squirrels are rodents and can carry rabies. If your skin is broken by a tooth or claw there is a reasonlably high chance it will get infected. Gloves, the thicker the better, would probably be best for handling it.

    Found baby squirrel need help?

It is illegal to keep the squirrel. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. You can find one here: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact.鈥?/a>

These people have the specialized training to care for sick, injured and orphaned wild animals. They also have the state and federal licenses required for anyone who keeps native wild animals, even for a short time, until they are healthy enough to be released back into the wild.

Do not take it to animal control or the SPCA. They are not licensed to care for wild animals. Most vets, also, do not deal with wild animals. The wildlife rehabber is the one to take it to.Found baby squirrel need help?
contact a vet that can get you into contact with a wildlife rehabilitator. You need a permit in order to keep a wild animal.Found baby squirrel need help?
if you call animal control they will help it and can give it the proper care but if you want to keep it then you can go to the store and get some kitty milk suppliment (it worked for my rabbits) and get a tiny bottle or an eyedropper and feed it with that and in about 1 1/2 to 2 months you can start feeding it corn but it has to be small so get cracked corn. also it will need to stay very warm so make sure it is very cozy.
Go to this website to find a local wildlife rehabber in your area. Squirrels can be very difficult to raise!

    http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/
    thats cute
The best thing to do for the squirrel is contact a local licensed wildlife rehabilator. If you can't find one on your own call The Fish

%26amp; Game department. And maybe they can refer you to someone. Most US states do not allow you to keep or care for wildlife unless you have a license to do so.

I did this myself and the rehabilator was nice enough to

let me take the squirrel back and i released him back in the woods where i found him

    i named him rocky
ur lucky, give it small nuts or bread pieces and take it to the vet
A flying baby squirrel? I'm guessing he has wings or you'd have posted this under something else. Grin.

Actually, contact local animal shelters - they can direct you to someone who deals with wildlife and how to rescue them. Do this quickly - as a baby - he could die without the proper care.
okay get an eye dropper and a heating pad . I think you might need saw dust or cedar shavings for bedding put the heating pad under the shavings . also get a sock any kind will do they will crawl into that at night . be sure to put the baby in an aquarium at night too . also get some kitten or puppy formula and this will need to be fed every 2-3 hrs just like kittens . and if you dont have a heating pad use a hot water bottle . I know this is hard . Listen if you need any more help please email me . good luck .
OK first off I believe that it is against the law in a lot of places to have a wild animal without a permit so please don't listen to the people that tell you to take care of it yourself. And please don't put it in cedar shavings. Those could make the baby squirrel really sick. Call your local wildlife rescue center in the morning. If there is not one in your area then call a vet and they could point you in the right direction.
Hi . My family and I took a baby squirrel from our cat last year. We took him to our local zoo's vet center. They took care of him for us and promised to release him back into the wild when he was old enough. There are probably several wildlife refuges in your local yellow pages.I hope the little guy will be okay :)
Take it to a animal shelter

    and don't feed it MILK!!!!!!
Take the squirrel to a vet and have him checked out then you can feed it milk through an eyedropper and stuff like that treat it like you would treat a runt puppy or kitten.
take it 2 the local aspca and ask them 2 help

I have a baby squirrel that is paralized. Help!!?

This afternoon there was a squirrel at my barn that has been hit by a 4 wheeler. This happened 12. So we swore he was dead and he ended up not being dead. He is still breathing and moving his hind end is just broken. He is a little fighter. I have called everyone I could and not able to get a hold of anyone but what I have herd is to keep him warm which is what I am doing. Does anyone else know what to do while to wait for people to contact me?I have a baby squirrel that is paralized. Help!!?
you have to feed it puppy formula from a pet store or vet...and keep it warm try ';stimulating'; (massaging) it and keep it warm.

take it to a vet and ask for help there.

there are websites with help on caring for baby squirrels and organizations that take them.

i knew this girl last year who found a baby squirrel that was abandoned so after it had been alone for a long time she took it and she has it a a pet now. just keep it warm and feed it. take it to the vet to see what they can do for the broken leg.I have a baby squirrel that is paralized. only ONE EYE is closed...not two..but it was open till yesterday night...PLS help me ...My baby squirrel's one eye is closed from today morning...it was not so before.help me please?
Is it goopy? He might have an infection. I'd try very gently washing it with a clean moistened(with warm water) cotton ball. If that doesn't work, you might have to call a vet.My baby squirrel's one eye is closed from today morning...it was not so before.help me please?
Get him a patch. He can be a little vermin pirate.
Moisten a very soft towel with warm water, wipe the crusty eye very gently. Squeeze a little Terramycin opthalmic ointment into the corner of the eye. Check %26amp; repeat daily, looking for pus under the closed eyelid.

Be very gentle in all treatments.
why do you have a pet squirell? It's more than likely going to grow up and attack you. I'd do what the guy above me said, give it an eyepatch, maybe a little sheath with a little scimitar, and a black pirate hat. Then build a tiny boat, put him in it, then send it off to sea.

    Baby squirrel question?

my baby squirrel is now 5 weeks old and healthy but recently it has become very active and doesn't want to go to sleep at times. Why is he doing this? Please do't leave any answers saying take him to a vet because i already did that and they told me it was fine to stay with me.Baby squirrel question?
squirrels are Very energetic, so don't worry. Squirrels are ALWAYS like that,at lest,it starts when their old enough to run around!!Baby squirrel question?
Trust me----it will only get worse. I have raised plenty of orphaned squirrels and they're only ';fun'; until they get mobile. He needs to tone up his muscles and he will do this by becomming more and more active. I used to allow my babies to scamper around the house for excersize but they would get into the bread on the countertop, chew on the ends of my wooden shelfs and knock things off, pull curtains down, dig up my house plants, and just generally tear the house apart!! There comes an age when they are still too young to release, but too old to stay in the confines of a small cage. It's time to move your 5 week old to a larger one. I now have a special cage that I made just for this phase in their life. It's a large wire cage and has a wooden box in it for them to sleep in. I have the cage securely nailed to a tree outside by the house. Through the cage wire, I have cut about a 3'; hole and inserted a piece of 3'; PVC pipe with a cap on the outside. I put my babies outside in that cage for the first time when they get too active to be inside. They cant get out through the PVC pipe yet because the cap is on. I feed them in the cage and make sure their bed is warm and cozy. For about 4-5 days, they stay in this cage----like it or not. Then one day I take the cap off the end of the PVC pipe. Eventually they find their way out and onto the tree. (The pipe needs to be fairly close to the tree). They scamper around like lunatics all day long, but return to the cage in the evening to eat and sleep. I never put the cap back on the PVC at this point. The main purpose of the 3'; pipe is to allow the squirrel to come and go in his ';safe zone'; where cats or raccoons cant get him. Eventually they come back a little less and less and, at some point, they stop using the cage altogether. The last one I released would still come down to visit with me for about 7 months after I let her go. She's the only squirrel I raised to adolescence that did NOT bite the crap out of me. When they get to be about 12-14 weeks old, especially the boys, they have no quallms about biting you to the bone for no reason. That's why I no longer keep them that long. Now, with the cage I've devised, I let THEM decide when they're ready to go. Even though your baby is only 5 weeks old, he needs to be in a bigger cage right now....like one of those multi-story ferret cages, with several tree branches stuck in there for coordination practice. Temptimg though it may be, he will not make a good pet at all, if that's your intentions. He wont ride on your shoulder and impress all your friends. He is a wild animal and you'll be reminded of that the first time he bites the hand that fed him for several weeks. When he gets to be about 7 weeks old, he'll be ready to start scampering out of the cage and up into the trees. He'll stay in only 1 tree at first, and come back to his cage at night. But he'll eventually move on and become just like all the other wild squirrels. If there's any way you can, try to nail his cage to a tree and put the pipe in it so he can come and go as he pleases. It's getting cold so the sooner you release him, the sooner he can get started on his winter bed high up in the trees. He may decide to ride out the winter in the cage you've nailed to the tree....who knows? Mother Nature will show him what to do....you just need to let him do what he choses.

http://www.awrc.org/Eastern%20Gray%20Squ鈥?/a>I found a baby squirrel, it,s eyes are not yet open. I am feeding it ok, but, it feels cold all the time.?
If it's eyes are not open yet it is less than 5 weeks old. A baby squirrel can not produce body heat by itself. That is why they stay with the mother so long. Try putting a heating pad on low under the blanket you keep it on. Do not use towels because they can get their nails caught in a towel. Make sure you feed it only puppy milk replacer, and when it is done eating make sure you stimulate it to pee and poop.
I would try and find an animal reserve to take it. they will care for it and put it back in the wild properly. you caring for it may make it rely on you and never leave. if they will not take it, ask them if they will help you do the proper thing for it. Such as proper food and nutrition. it may be severly ill and that is why it is cold. If no animal reserves around you, contact a few pet shops. It is a rodent and they all carry rodents so they can aim you in the right direction
I DON'T NO IF THEY R COLD BLOODED.i DON'T THINK THEY R.WRAP THE SQUIRREL IN A COUPLE OF BLANKETS AND THAT MITE KEEP IT WARM.I DON'T THINK 1 IS ENOUGH
Use a heating pad on low to keep it warm. Feed it like you would any other baby animal and contact your local animal refuge, they will be more than happy to take it and help it on its way to a full life. They are very vicious and can distroy someones home, so please be very careful.
What are you feeding the squirrel? They need a special type of food mixture, not anything that you may have in your house. You really need to take the squirrel to a wildlife rehabilitater. They are properly trained for taking care of wildlife. There is a good chance that you may do more harm than good and possessing a wild animal in the U.S. without a license is illegal.

    - a vet assistant/ wildlife rehabilitater
Oh no no, they are mammals and are warm blooded. Keep the baby warm! Chances are it wont survive, but maybe get a heating pad or keep it under your shirt! What are you feeding it? Try a watered down puppy formula, I believe I read that that has the proper nutrients... Good luck hun.
Take it to the vet.But ry to keep it warm.I hope it does not die.
No, they aren't cold-blooded. As much as possible, keep it against your body for warmth. Its not strong enough to produce its own heat so it needs outside heat - a towel won't do that. That is what the mother would do. Try to find some sort of wildlife rescue group in your area for more advice.

    BABY SQUIRREL????? help me please!!!?

OK my mom and i were wondering about baby squirrels becuse we are rehibilitating it ,it is about 5-6 weeks old and we are wondering ......what age do hey start drinking water so far we are feeding it goats milk and water ...... with a serange it can already curl its tail and its very adorable we keep it in a bird cage we are getting ready to move it out side to get it used to its surrounding and we need your help what do we do when we move it outside ?????? and at what age does it start drinking water?? any advice thanks byeBABY SQUIRREL????? help me please!!!?
Sorry for all this extra stuff just kinda got carried away, but they can start drinking water around 5-6 weeks.

Diet- Baby squirrels nurse on their mother until about 4 months of age. Babies do not get back teeth until around 8-10 weeks of age. At around 5 weeks the eyes open. A few days after the eyes open is the time to start putting some solid food into the incubator for them to start ';teething'; on. There is no need to wean them on mush, etc.. Any Cheerio type round oat cereal is a good first item for babies to chew on. Also whole grain breads are good. Usually after being fed formula, when put back into the incubator, babies go straight for a piece of Cheerio and start chewing. Notice that there will be lots of crumbs. They are just working their teeth. Only when the baby is around 8 weeks do they actual start ingesting the solid food. For a complete list on proper solid foods, see Proper Diet . As a source of calcium, a cleaned beef bone or deer antler should put in cage to chew on. Make sure to get all traces of meat off the bone. Here is a list of foods they CAN and CAN NOT eat: they can eat: Purina- Regular dog chow

    Publix Ration Style- dog chow

Rodent chow/block- for rats and mice

    Cauliflower-one of the best veggies

    Oranges

    Strawberry

    Watermelon

    Endive

    Carrots

    Kohlrabi

    Mustard Greens

    Tangerine

    Rutabaga

    Dandelion Greens

    Any whole grain breads

WHAT THEY CAN'T HAVE: Any type of candies

    Cherrys

    Pineapples

    Peaches

    Apricots

    Eggplant

    Regular Lettuce

    Sweet Potato

    Pumpkin

    Grapes- can choke on skin

    Bananas-bad ca/ph ratio

    Corn- worst veggie

Any dog food with meat and protein levels higher than 22%.

Hamster food. Guinea Pig food. Bird Seed.

Start fedding it water around 5-6 Weeks.. If you need any more info please feel free to e-mail me. Hope this helpsBABY SQUIRREL????? help me please!!!?
you should give it a little dropper thing that's always available (like they ahve for mice and birds) and then it will drink water when it is ready to. also does it have lots of nice warm blankets to curl up in?

i think you should put it outside right now, but give it a little smaller house that it can go into so it will be outside inside :).

what are you feeding it? dog or cat food? i bet you can also get it nuts, but i bet that the baby ones would like cat food a lot. maybe if it got wet too, we used to feed baby birds with wet cat food.

very cute. i think you shoudl look up the answer at a more legitimate place than here cause people will tell you the wrong stuff and it will die. ask a vet for advice.
You MUST not feed the baby squirrel goat's milk. It is not adequate nourishment for a baby squirrel - any squirrel rehabilitation website will tell you this. It needs puppy formula, found at your local pet store. Esbilac is one brand name for it. According to every legitimate rehab information I've ever read, feeding baby squirrels cow or goat's milk will eventually lead to death.

    I hope this helps.
Aww!! How great! That is so sweet! But you do realize, it will never be a wild squirrel once it was raised in captivity. I would say start feeding it around 10-12 weeks old, and introduce it to acorns along that time too. If you have a fenced yard, put it in that, and let it roam around by itself for a while. If he gets out, or climbs a tree, dont go after him. Just leave out some of the food that you usually feed it and some fresh water where it can find it. It will never be completely wild, so it will always depend on you as its mother. Good luck!!
when they get there teeth in !
you should contact a wildlife rescue or vet or spca for more specific info. are you certified to rehab them? is that required in your area?

It could be scared, cold, lonely, or having separation anxiety from its mother. Noises could also be scaring it to death. Put it in a cage, with a small stuffed animal, and a heating pad underneath a a baby blanket (heating pad on low). then continue to feed it. For more help, play a little soothing classical music or something nice (like talking to it quietly).
Do you stay around the house a lot? If you don't, it could just be looking for extra attention. Are you keeping it warm enough? It could be cold. I am an expert on dogs, cats and horses... I don't really know much about squirrels!
Yes, he could be hungry every hour if you aren't feeding him enough. He could also be lonely or cold.

They are simply refered to as babies, infants, or young while the mother is still caring for them. After they have left the nest, they are called juveniles until they are 1 year old and then are refered to as adults.

PLEASE i beg of you do not call any wildlife places because they will put him down even if he has chance of survival i have gone through this exact thing and it was the most amazing animal i have ever known if you feel around the spine you might feel that it feels broken if you feel his spine is snapped then he is paralized if he is young PLEASE check out this website it will give you all the ';need to knows'; on how to feed it and care for it ..http://britishwildlifehelpline.com/rearing_young_squirrels.html ... if he doesnt have any blood from the nose make sure his eyes and ears are clean then he should be ok.. if you have any more questions please feel free to ask me i have gone through this.. and please dont handle him too much right away it could make his injuries very much worse... oh and if he has bugs like red ones or anything dont worry give him a nice warm bath and they die off..Baby Squirrel help?
You should use a syringe like the ones you use to give infants medicine to feed it.Feed it only Puppy formula,Kitten formula is to high in protein. It may recuperate but if it does you need to let it go.Squirrels always die in captivity. They have a very high metabolism that they need to use and can never get there selves run out so to speak while caged. It slows there hearts down to slow and they die.I'm sorry to tell you this but if you really care about the animal then this is the best advice.
Buy some guinea pig or bunny food from the pet store and feed it to it. Also, bananas, apples, you know, stuff like that. We found a baby squirrel one, named it Stewie, and just gave it some water and food. If you know for sure that it's legs are broken, don't make it move. For instance - put the food right next to it. Feed by hand until it gets older. Put old towels in it's box/cage. Stewie always curled up inside the towels and made a little tunnel. So...yeah, they're not hard to take care of. Be careful! I wouldn't suggest letting anyone under 10 take care of it - one drop or squeeze and it's instantly dead. Their bones are INCREDIBLY fragile. Good luck! =)
You need to get it to a local wildlife reahab..they may be able to repair it's leg and hopefully get it released back into the wild. Look for one near you here:

Not sure you can legally keep it as a pet.. you need to check your states laws.
Your local humane society can give you some help. I found an injured rabbit and called them. They pointed me to a local vet hospital that treats wild animals using donations. They took the rabbit and cared for it until it was able to be released.
You need help from a wildlife rehabber. Your local vet should have a number. With care the legs will probably heal fine believe it or not! But, it needs correct nutrition to avoid seizure disorders. It also needs a humane release program when old enough. I know he is incredibly cute now, but adult squirrels bite, pee on everything, chew everything, and are terrible pets. Please don't think of keeping him!
In my opinion i would bring him to a vet!!

Depend on how young it is might need something more like baby formula . It will eat nuts like pecans if it is old enough . I had a friend that had one he could let outside %26amp; it would come back , but I had one as soon as I let it out it took off even though he was very friendly with us before that .I found a baby squirrel while I was mowing. any suggestions on what I could feed it....I was thinking puppy mi?
if you go to any pet store get the kitten milk the one that you mix with warm water. make sure to use a seringe or a small bottle that could fit in its mouth. you will have to do that every 2 hrs or so because it is just a baby.

my cats dragged in some baby squirrels and thats how we fed them. hope that helpedI found a baby squirrel while I was mowing. any suggestions on what I could feed it....I was thinking puppy mi?
If his eyes are open and he's able to walk, you can put him back outside. If he's younger, you will have to call a wildlife rescue and see if they will take him. It's hard to keep babies alive on your own. It's better to let professionals handle it.
Feed it kitten milk re-placer/kitten milk every 2 hours, depending on if its eyes are open.
